A screenshot of a LinkedIn post from Gokal Krishnan of The Math Connection. The text says “Real life Mathematics” followed by a sandwich emoji. Then there is a quote: “Mathematics is the supreme judge; from its decisions there is no appeal.” — Tobias Dantzig.
A picture is titled “Real life Mathemarics” and shows two sandwiches, one cut into two with a diagonal cut and the other cut into two with a vertical cut parallel to the sides.
Below this is one triangle half sandwich and an equal sign and one rectangle half sandwich.
Below this is the heading “proof” followed by the sentence “If the side of the sandwich is x, then the area of both parts are”
A picture of the triangle as half a square with the perpendicular edges labelled x and x, is equal to half times base times height, which is equal to x squared divided by 2
A picture of the rectangle as half a square with the perpendicular edges labelled x divided by 2 and x, is equal to length times width, which is equal to x times x divided by 2, which is equal to x squared divided by 2.
Saw this on LinkedIn and I beg to differ. They are not equal and the triangle sandwich is better, as every child knows.
