And remember, if someone claims to be from FEMA, insurance, or the county, you can ask to see a badge or other identification!
If you've been affected by the LA fires, be aware: scammers often pose as contractors. Here's some red flags to watch for:
* Coming door-to-door
* Asking to be paid in cash only
* Trying to rush you into a contract
* Not having a license or insurance in your state
* Asking for personal info
If you live in the LA area and haven't already:
1. Make sure you're signed up for multiple different sources of evacuation notifications.
2. Pack a go bag.
3. Record a video of your home that shows all your belongings. Open closets, drawers, cabinets. Documentation is essential.
Why should you call insurance ASAP? Because opening a claim may trigger Loss of Use benefits — which can help cover:
* temporary housing
* emergency medicine refills
* food
