They are so convinced of this by their religious leaders they are willing to do the unthinkable. Trump does the same thing. He knows if you just promise the people whatever they want, whatever their dreams are knowing it's all a lie he will get what he wants.

I saw this time and time again on the set of The Apprentice. He was able to talk to people the show was screwing over and make them feel good about it. Again. It's his superpower and it is the only way he was twice elected as president.
