Meet Sarah Guillory

"I went into the library just the other day and was reminded as soon as I stepped inside just how vital and miraculous a library is. A place of information, learning, and discovery open to every person in the community, free of charge. What an absolute triumph the public library is!"

Our district is dropping AP completely. 😩 I’ve been teaching AP Lit for over a decade.

I grew up without a TV (and before the internet was widely available), so my main source of entertainment was my local library. My library was especially important during long, boring summer months where I had little to do.

Books! Comics! Magazines Newspapers! I could even watch videos at my library! And it was all for free! It felt magical!

Posting on Instagram about my upcoming book feels like screaming into the void. I would get more notice if I stood on the street corner and shouted about it to people at the red light.

Happy National Library Week! This week you should:
1) Donate $ to your local Friends of the Library

2) Write to your public library director to thank them for standing up for diversity or to condemn them for caving to fascists

3) Plan a similar public comment for the next library board mtg

It's been so interesting to watch this unfold. Barnes & Noble and other big book chains shut indies down in the the 1990s (and on) and then Amazon came along and ate up all the book market share. Now people tired of big corporations are creating demand for more indies

My next middle grade novel, A WISH WITH WINGS, comes out next month. It’s earned three starred reviews so far, and features a fierce girl who is proud when others call her feral.

It’s hard promoting your own book, and even harder when your imprint is closing, but I worked very hard on a book I am enormously proud of, so I will keep screaming into the void. Celebrate your own accomplishments, y’all, because you earned it. ❤️

Rules for creative work always end up being rules for life as well, & they all come down to the same six principles, IMO:
1. Pay attention.
2. Tell the truth.
3. Honor your work.
4. Love your people.
5. Have fun.
6. Stay open.

“You gotta learn AI or get left behind!” is a bit galling given that the entire purpose of AI seems to be to steal our work and fuck our brains and shit up the planet, which is to say, its GOAL is to leave us all behind. That, in order to make its owners rich.

What radicalized me? 10 days in Tokyo where the streets were clean, the people courteous of others, the public transportation ran on time, and the 7-11’s are stocked 3xs a day with fresh & delicious food/drinks. America, the rest of the world is living in the future and we’re stuck in the dark ages.

“We want to destroy the humanities as a field, we only want people working vocations, we don’t want you thinking, speaking, writing for yourself.”

Is, once again, a Saturday morning cartoon villain’s plot.

Every single one of the astronauts who went to the moon and back on Artemis II was educated at a public school.

Thinking of the teachers who poured into Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen tonight. You helped send a kid to the moon!

In light of the conversation about how hard it is to promote your own book: Post a link to buy your book here and I’ll boost it cause you destroyed yourself to get it done, your publisher won’t help you sell it, and you deserve cheers and admiration for your accomplishment.
