Our district is dropping AP completely. 😩 I’ve been teaching AP Lit for over a decade.

I grew up without a TV (and before the internet was widely available), so my main source of entertainment was my local library. My library was especially important during long, boring summer months where I had little to do.

Books! Comics! Magazines Newspapers! I could even watch videos at my library! And it was all for free! It felt magical!

Over the summer, I'd spend practically every day at my local library. But there was one problem... "Why're you lying around here? Go out! Go to the library!"

...my library was closed on Mondays. "I can't! It's Mondayyy!" "Oh. Right."

It's been so interesting to watch this unfold. Barnes & Noble and other big book chains shut indies down in the the 1990s (and on) and then Amazon came along and ate up all the book market share. Now people tired of big corporations are creating demand for more indies

Rules for creative work always end up being rules for life as well, & they all come down to the same six principles, IMO:
1. Pay attention.
2. Tell the truth.
3. Honor your work.
4. Love your people.
5. Have fun.
6. Stay open.

“You gotta learn AI or get left behind!” is a bit galling given that the entire purpose of AI seems to be to steal our work and fuck our brains and shit up the planet, which is to say, its GOAL is to leave us all behind. That, in order to make its owners rich.

What radicalized me? 10 days in Tokyo where the streets were clean, the people courteous of others, the public transportation ran on time, and the 7-11’s are stocked 3xs a day with fresh & delicious food/drinks. America, the rest of the world is living in the future and we’re stuck in the dark ages.
