There are a lot of things theater experience gives an actor that I’m not mentioning here, but I bring this up because Carrie Coon — whose career really took off as theater actor in Chicago — talked to “The Pitt’s” Taylor Dearden for Interview magazine and the topic of theater vs. TV/film comes up!

I do love the physical rigor of theater, too. No one's going to come in and do your stunt for you. You're doing all the yelling and crying and jumping and rolling and slapping. It asks so much of our bodies. I think so often in TV and film, women's roles in particular don't ask that broadness from us. It's much more limited. But I feel like The Pitt is such a physical show.

An actor’s limitations are more easily exposed on stage and this might be why so few of today’s young stars do it, which is too bad because they’d probably become better actors for it

But my real point is that there are tons of young actors out there *with theater training* who should be hired!

There’s no hiding in theater. Doing plays means performing a character’s arc and experience from start to finish vs. doing TV/film, which is shot out-of-order and therefore every scene is discrete and out of context (and requires its own skill set, I’m not underplaying that talent as well!)

My (semi?) unpopular opinion/theory is that many of today’s young “stars” can’t actually act — they may have potential! But at the moment they lack depth and skill despite the leading roles they’re being asked to shoulder — and some of this is because they came up doing TV/film rather than theater

Ultimately Silicon Valley’s fatal flaw is that it has a glut of losers in a loser echo chamber and they have no idea why nobody else thinks their ideas are good and fun
