My favorite LOR trick: I ask students to write reflections on patients we shared. Their own words help me capture their growth, empathy, and impact—so my letters sound like them, not their CV. Thanks, @gbosslet.bsky.social for teaching me this trick.
Yep they can have a family member sleep in the recliner all night, if they want.
The NIH move to restrict animal research is a bad one and not just about health - it's about national security.

This is a picture of my son taken soon after he was born. I suffered from a very rare pregnancy complication. But thanks to physicians at the University of Michigan and a lot of US funded research, he was born healthy. Please post, who has Science Saved for you? #WhoScienceSaves #MedSky
We save patients every day with antibiotics, vasopressors, and mechanical ventilators.

Measles:
MASSIVELY contagious- 9 in 10 people near a person with measles will be infected
and
~20% of people who get it will be hospitalized
but also
MASSIVELY preventable- 2 doses of the measles vaccine is 97% effective
If you are not vaccinated against measles, now is a great time
A nice explanation of indirect costs of research grants for non-scientists

How much Elon Musk makes from the government a day: $8 million.
How much a senior on Social Security gets a day: $65
Guess which budget Musk and Trump want to cut?
Our state attorney general did join the lawsuit. Researchers are now submitting grants with the original, negotiated indirect rate. IN receives much more than NM in NIH funds…
Elon Musk wants to strip out payments for the indirect costs of doing vital research for the federal govt — while SpaceX gets to keep its undisclosed indirect rate.
The fact that this order references pausing any programs that include the Green New Deal
a bill that never passed
shows how much this administration is tilting at windmills
And this can be interpreted perfectly in all the ways
Bipartisan support for NIH and biomedical research is key to retaining US leadership Dear Sen. Tillis, I am a constituent, a Professor at UNC-Chapel Hill and a biomedical researcher with 33 years of funding from NIH. You have been a strong supporter of NIH and biomedical research, recognizing the impact of the more than $2 billion in funding NIH brings to NC Universities and its broader economic impact. The US has led in biomedical research for many decades, yielding impressive improvements in treatment of cancer and heart disease, and stunning new opportunities to use gene therapy in diseases like Type 1 diabetes and sickle cell disease. In the last 10 years, China has massively increased investment in science, and is threatening our lead. To remain competitive, we need to continue our investment. The actions this week by the Trump Administration to shut down NIH study sections and pause funding sent shock waves through our community. We need to resume bipartisan support for NIH or lose a generation of scientists. I would like to connect with the aide in the Tillis office who handles HHS and NIH and have a conversation about these issues--please have them email me. Thank you for your past support Mark Peifer
The rapid actions of the Trump Administration to shut down all communication by NIH, thus putting both study sections and councils on hold, is challenging for all of us. We can make our voices known. Below is an example email I sent to both NC Senators (text in alt text) 1/2 🧪
