(I understand a lot of them are more anime-inspired, but frankly, I have the same criticisms there. If your all-but-explicitly "Nichijou"-inspired RPG about cute girls doing nothing can't handle the scene from its source material where one of the girls beats up a cop, it is not fit for purpose!)
To me, Ghibli works are about showing us that the world is beautiful and there is much to love *even with* the darkness that people are forced to confront in it, and I feel like there's a lot of media that wants to use those aesthetics but avoid the substance of the work.
This is why the misuse of the term Ghibli-esque makes my eye twitch.
The aesthetics are soft and beautiful, yes. Themes often include such low-stakes conflicts as fighting fascism, the destruction of the environment and battling the depths of depression.
Look I'm sorry but if these people want to kill themselves because they are too brainwashed by fascism to realise you shouldn't guzzle shit-tainted milk and they think chain smokers are the picture of health then I'm just glad they're taking care of the problem for us at this point.
