DUNE: WAR FOR ARRAKIS - is a decent wargame and fun - easier to play than WAR OF THE RING.
My brain melted from learning all the wrinkles and exceptions - there’s a lot to teach when you start explaining the rules.

For my money, INVINCIBLE is the best superhero saga I’ve seen - beats Marvel and DC hands down. Currently watching s4
Currently listening to @mongoosepublishing.bsky.social talk to the Grognard Files about TRAVELLER’S: The Pirates of Drinax. Great podcast!

I wrote two standalone science fiction #ttrpg books in the same dark industrial sci-fi universe.
Those Dark Places is about surviving the dangers of dystopian space travel, with a simple system.
Pressure is about having a fighting chance against that same danger, with a more detailed system.
GM Tip: When you can, step back and let the players run the scenes between themselves. Two characters arguing strategy. A heart-to-heart around the campfire. You don't need to narrate everything, let them build the party dynamic together.

Another recommendation, especially if you liked SORCERER: the ENDBRINGER expansion.
There’s a ton of content in the box, and offers the opportunity to solo or group battle a variety of bosses, and their varied accompanying minions.
While awaiting the sequel, I’ve dipped back into SLAY THE SPIRE. In my top 10 of all time - such an incredibly satisfying game to play.
Also, it’s easier to dip into quickly, or have a swift session.
Was out filming for the MHTV channel and grabbed a mock-up of the T&T main rule book. The Kickstarter has about a week to go! www.kickstarter.com/projects/reb...
ARCHITECTS OF THE WEST KINGDOM is a very fine example of the worker placement genre of board game. It has a lovely-looking board, and does enough different for it to stay in my collection.
Don’t think much of the expansions, though.
It’s a little similar to MTG, but you’re battling over 3 primary combat areas. And it has dice - which Magic famously does not.
Here’s a card game recommendation: SORCERER. Without the expansion, it’s a 2-player battle - with both players picking ‘pods’ of cards to build their decks.
The action system is cool, and so are the player boards. Wonderfully grim art style too!
Another board game I admire: BRIAN BORU. It’s basically DIAMONDS with an area control element, and has been a hit with us. Clever design!
In this entry in a continuing series covering the Beautiful Boards of Wargaming! we take a look at the fantastic work of Chechu Nieto for All Bridges Burning: Red Revolt and White Guard in Finland, 1917-1918 from GMT Games. theplayersaid.com/2024/08/09/t...
Nice that some folks are still playing one of my old games:
Today’s board game recommend:
KELP - a 2-player game that should be in the dictionary definition of asymmetric. Each player is playing by completely different systems.
My only caveat: takes a moment to digest the rules.
My wife played A Very Civil. Whist for the first time. Her review: "surprisingly I didn't dislike it, your best game so far, though I really disliked the other two."
Heartwarming 😅
Just challenged dad to a game of BLITZKRIEG. Great filler 2p abstract wargame.
Fourth time I’ve seen it, and I still was got by a few of the jump scares.
And it’s a wonderful looking film - lots of red glow, etc. The thumping music is also memorable.
Popped in ALIEN ROMULUS, again. Very entertaining movie! 🍿
The incredible, eye-melting original ending to PHASE IV (1974), Saul Bass's cerebral take on the 'When Animals Attack' sub-genre; super-intelligent ants, in this case.
Another board game recommendation: GO AHEAD PUNK!
A refreshing take on Scotland Yard, with a Dirty Harry theme. It’s fun.
The Scorpio sniper player has to kill targets from particular rooftops (and escape) to win.
Another 2-player Reiner Knizia board game designs that I enjoy: ICHOR
This looks interesting: CTHULHU BY GASLIGHT: DUST AND BLOOD. It's a cool era to play cosmic horror within!
Can recommend the Martin Wallace board game A HANDFUL OF STARS.
It’s a deckbuilder with conflict, but didn’t land with everyone in our group due to this reason.
Art by David Bergen for Shipwreck by Charles Logan (Panther, 1977)
Can recommend the sci-fi horror HOSTILE RPG. It’s basically an ALIEN or OUTLAND retooling of TRAVELLER.
Watched it again!
Another board game I’m fond of, but not my favourite ALIEN-themed game, is Alien: FATE OF NOSTROMO.
Plays well at 2 players and okay at 4, and doesn’t outlast its welcome.
