In the KJV specifically, John 1:5 “And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” I know that comprehended here is an old version of the word. But something about the idea of the darkness simply not understanding the light has always affected me

The whole thing feels a bit like someone had taken Vaughan Williams London Symphony, made it martial and added a choir. Which I’m not necessarily opposed to
The Angry Flames and Torches movements are somewhat of their times but definitely a bit more shocking that the Benedictus setting would suggest
The thing is, I quite like the
Mass for Peace. The Benedictus is massively overdone, but it is the most accessible part. And all classical radio stations neglect choral music. As a symphonic Mass it’s actually pretty good. I’ve sung many a worse modern Mass setting. Composers shall remain nameless

Kicking off Monday at Labour Party Conference with a breakfast panel on mental health with @manmetuni.bsky.social’s Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof Deborah James
Lots happening this year for Man Met at Labour Party Conference!
Anyone at Lib Dem conference this year? Give me a shout if you fancy a pint and a chat!
It’s reported that Starmer, Macron, Von der Leyen and Rutte are going to the White House with Zelenskyy. Genuinely curious about what happens with if they refuse a meeting with Zelenskyy because he is ‘not in a suit’ with them in tow
One day, Finsbury Park will be dry!
It’s VJ Day so Im guessing it might be a gun salute?
I’ll drop you a message to sort a time
Is this you and your water leak reporting ways Mark? I’m actually going to be at conference for the first time in quite a while. Would you like to meet for a coffee at some point?
Omg! You’re here! NGL you helped me get through lockdown!
Though most Zoomers have parents who are Gen X. Purely anecdotal but in the conversations I’ve had with Zoomers, they have little compunction re Boomers. Millennials are angry but I don’t think anyone is fully prepared yet for how angry Zoomers are
Despite the fact GM has existed as an administrative region since the 70s
There's a whole 'thing' where the other parts of Greater Manchester that aren't Manchester get a bit snippy about being part of Greater Manchester cf: www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater...
I seem to remember there was Mock the Week episode around the time of the financial crash when they phoned the Treasury to ask if they were using British billions. The press officer said yes of course to which the researcher asked ‘really? A million million?’ And the they had to back track
Isn’t there that whole thing about London being the 6th largest French city?
I love this salad. I also recommend black olives with it!
I prefer him in his guise as patron saint of lost things. I still sometimes mutter “St Anthony, St Anthony please down, something is lost and cannot be found” when in extremis while looking for something.
But what on earth has he done to earn such ire from them?
The world "Habemus Papam?!"
The chorister who's nicked off with the thurible:
I realise this isn't the story (Habemus Papam!) but I was suddenly reminded of the social media fame that a seagull garnered during the last Conclave
The People’s Republic of Greater Manchester! Really!?
Sharing this because so much nonsense is written about Eostre. This is a great article, and the blog is great. (And - name dropping - I sat next to Ronald Hutton at a conference once. Lovely man. His books are the gold standard.)
I think it looks closer to the SDLP green, who are a sister party - hostile takeover coming from Derry and Belfast South?
Not to mention trade marks and patents…
