If you ever take a Platanus world tour- there is another very old, magnificent one (not sure of the species) in the Convent of the Capuchos near Sintra, Portugal.

Buttonball Tree - Wikipedia

I'm lucky to live nearby to this exceptional and beautiful P. occidentalis - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buttonb... - though the flowers are a little far from my reach! I love trout lilies and their tasty little leaves.

Is anyone here knowledgeable about the new Midea (etc.) window unit, renter-friendly heat pumps? I am really curious about whether they work well and what kind of reductions in energy use they might offer (especially since my new apt. is very inefficient). LMK if I can ask you questions!

Thanks - that's so kind of you! I'll share back after the event - it's for an elementary school climate change fair.

This book was wild to me for this reason and the fact that it was branded as "cozy fantasy" was wilder 😬 the operative fantasy here was really disturbing imo

Colorful kids comic. Text: "Plants take a long time to: grow, change, adapt - to evolve! It can take millions of years. When a type of plant grows in the same place their long ago ancestors grew, they are a native plant. They have many connections to: birds, insects, microbes, and human beings. Over time, all the living beings that make up an ecosystem grow to fit each other just right! So, native plants have deep root. "Native plant" means old, rooted, and well-connected - not "never-changing". Illustrations of plants in ecosystems.

I made this educational comic for an upcoming event - it introduces native plants and introduced plants, and the impacts of climate change on plant communities, at a K-5 level. If you'd like to read it or use it, check out the whole thing here: doi.org/10.7275/2ns2...

Eastern N. America folks, it's just about go time for the start of the ~3 week peak migration (unless you're on the Gulf Coast, in which case it is go time NOW). Expect waves of incredible birds for the next month and a half

Turn those overnight lights off to protect them!

Please file impeachment. Please go to your colleagues personal homes, if you must, and urge them to do the same. To what lengths would you do to save your families lives from immediate threat? That is the caliber of action you should be taking TODAY.

They have an amazing amount of spammy "from" addresses to block. I ended up having to put in a filter rule that automatically deletes anything with the word "LinkedIn" in it. That's worked pretty well.

I'm a SFF reader, and I absolutely love and prefer sparse prose. I wish it was easier to find (though I can appreciate lyricism as well).

I have generally found this phrase very frustrating, in the university context I hear it all the time "don't comply until they tell you to" with a (usually) unsaid "and then immediately do whatever they tell you to"

No personal expertise in this area but there is a Puerto Rican community garden org near me and I know they grow lots of ají dulce peppers in containers which are a culturally important crop that likes heat and might be worth looking into? Depends on watering I guess.

Not to mention the uphill climb instructors face inviting students to write - when literally the first thing they see when they open a document is a "write for me" button. I don't know who to email about this but I'm pissed that I can't even look at a blank page before I write.

for these new features, apparently "When you use these features, relevant data is sent to Google in order to create AI experiences". Not like my native plant research is high security, but plenty of import controlled research, R&D, and FERPA-sensitive information happening in Google Docs here.

My university now by default prompts Gemini use in GSuite. When you open a Google Doc, instead of a blank page you see two buttons: "Generate document" and "Help me write". I toggled this off in my individual account settings but it didn't seem to do anything and I still see the buttons. Also,

Donate to Support Bancroft Neighbors Helping Neighbors, organized by J K We are Bancroft, a South Minneapolis neighborhood with tree lined streets, boulevard … J K needs your support for Support Bancroft Neighbors Helping Neighbors

People in my neighborhood need help, like so many others in Minnesota right now. I can vouch for this GFM - I was in the room when it was planned! I just gave $200. Can someone match me?

These relatively smaller funds are not getting the attention they need even though they are supporting tons of families.

I know we can pay every rent.

Great point! A lot of orgs with structured volunteer opportunities meet during working hours here - but it's also possible to set up something new/asynchronous. As a teenager I was part of a volunteer org that put fruit trees in public spaces and tended them - this is possible in lots of places
