Happy #CtenophoreDay (10-04) for those in Europe, UK, Australia & others that use DD-MM-YYYY format! This bi-annual event celebrates these squishy globs of goodness ๐คฉ Go ahead: share your favorite #ctenophore images and videos using the hashtag #CtenophoreDay! Credit video to @oceana.bsky.social.
Time to put the new German Society for Cell Biology lunchroom into your calendar! As always an excellent lineup:
Just because it's Monday, we love #microscopy & we love #mitochondria, the powerhouse of the #cell
We videoed mito under the microscope to see their dynamics.
Here they join forces!
Ofc we <3 the other #organelles too (to prevent jealousy)

Breakdown of costs for JCS in 2025. Pie chart: Editorial salaries and stipends - 19%; In-house production salaries - 23%; Manuscript processing and publication costs - 7%; Travel and expenses - 3%; Marketing - 6%; Sales - 8%; Community engagement - 5%; General expenses/overheads - 29%.
Why is publishing so expensive?
In this Editorial, we (@katherine-brown.bsky.social @drmichaelway.bsky.social & @seemagrewal.bsky.social) provide details and context on JCS's finances, and hope to dispel some of the myths around the economics of publishing.

PhD position in my lab!
Join us for a wonderful interaction with the virologist MJ Amorim at the CBR. Virus are helping us to uncover fascinating cell biology of centrosomes and cilia, and at the same time better understand host-pathogen interactions and how those can be targeted. Please spread to those interested!

I think there is a need for a complete re-think for organoid modeling.
As long as the architecture of organoids that you produce is not directly compared to a 3D map of the organ (say, a fallopian tube) or disease to be modeled, it will be approximate.

Multiwavelength Whirlpool Galaxy: Each image shows a narrow band of wavelengths of light and invisible radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum. The wavelength and energy of a photon relates to how fast electrons are accelerated. Low energy radiation comes from cool regions of molecular gas, and high energy radiation comes from hot spots where atoms are fully ionized. The combined images provide insight into the structure, temperature, and chemical composition of the Whirlpool Galaxy. The stars in the infrared image represent most of the mass of the galaxy, excluding dark matter, which can't be seen. The optical image represents a slightly smaller amount of mass and the other three images represent only traces of mass in molecules (radio image) massive hot stars, (ultraviolet image) and hot plasma (x-ray image).
Radio is beyond red
Gamma rays, beyond blue
There are 80 octaves of the electromagnetic spectrum
But only one we can view ๐งช
