Neural trajectory plot showing neural activity moving through orthogonal corollary discharge and feedback signal subspaces

Neural trajectory plot showing neural activity moving through orthogonal corollary discharge and feedback signal subspaces

New preprint! 🧵🧪🧠

Upshot: somatosensory cortex contains both feedback *and* intended movement signals (a.k.a. corollary discharge). These two signals exist orthogonally in neural space, flexibly allowing both fast state estimation and external perturbation detection. 1/

All we are is manifolds in the wind...

That's not quite what Juan @juangallego.bsky.social says, but I do wish he sang it to me.

We discuss all things neural manifolds, and a little motor control and BCI for spinal injury prosthetics

Compact deep neural network models of the visual cortex Nature - Parsimonious deep neural network models can be used for prediction of visual neuron responses.

DNN models of the brain are getting bigger. Are we replacing one complicated system in vivo with another in silico?

In new work, we seek the *smallest* DNN models of visual cortex, balancing prediction with parsimony.

It turns out these compact models are surprisingly small!

Beautiful work. I wonder if the results are consistent with a point made by Russo et al 2018. They show that muscle activity is decoded from low variance signals in the motor cortex while the high variance signals have a different role.

A neural manifold view of the brain - Nature Neuroscience Recent advances in neuroscience have revealed how neural population activity underlying behavior can be well described by topological objects called neural manifolds. Understanding how nature, nurture...

Check out our new review/perspective (w/ @juangallego.bsky.social & Devika Narain) on neural manifolds in the brain! It was a lot of fun to think through these ideas over the past couple of years, and I'm excited it's finally out in the world!

The advantages of the eLife and other post publication peer review models has never been clearer. Now would be a great time to drop the gatekeeper approach to science.

Dynamical constraints on neural population activity - Nature Neuroscience Oby, Degenhart, Grigsby and colleagues used a brain–computer interface to challenge monkeys to override their natural time courses of neural activity. They found the time courses to be highly robust, ...

Is our brain infinitely flexible or constrained? Oby & colleagues cleverly uses BCIs to test what cortical activity can/can't be generated quickly. Highly recommend!

Targeted stimulation of motor cortex neural ensembles drives learned movements During the execution of learned motor skills, the neural population in the layer 2/3 (L2/3) of the primary motor cortex (M1) expresses a reproducible spatiotemporal activity pattern. It is debated whe...
