Walz: If you say you love freedom but you don't believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love is not freedom, it is privilege.

A screenshot of a ChatGPT conversation reading: "can you write something about robert e. lee in the voice of washington post staff writer gillian brockell?"
"Certainly! Here's an excerpt written in the voice of Gillian Brockell, a staff writer at The Washington Post, reflecting on Robert E. Lee's legacy:

The Complicated Legacy of Robert E. Lee: A Figure Divided by History
By Gillian Brockell
When Robert E. Lee's name is invoked, it is often as a symbol of Southern pride military brilliance, or a tragic, doomed cause. But history has a way of shifting its lens, and in recent years, the image of Lee -- the Confederate general, the hero of lost causes -- has become increasingly more fraught. The man who stood as the face of a rebellion that tore the nation apart now stands at the center of an ongoing reckoning over the Confederacy's legacy, and our struggle to reconcile memory with reality."

When I left the Washington Post in 2023, my colleagues and I were worried AI would hoover up our work and enable "zombies" to churn out stories based on our reporting and writing styles.

Today WaPo announced a partnership with OpenAI. And here it is: Zombie Gillian Brockell. I DID NOT WRITE THIS.

it has never been more crucial for cis lesbians to be loud in support of our trans family. this is a chilling escalation of longtime tactics; attempts at a “feminist” case for transphobia ALWAYS include a disingenuous “nooooo won’t someone think of the poor lil lesbians 🥺🥺🥺” and it is such bullshit

A screenshot of a tweet by the official White House account.

Text: “Fixed it for you, @NYTimes.
Oh, and by the way, @ChrisVanHollen - he's NOT coming back.”

There is also a screenshot of the front page of the NyT with a large headline and photo about Van Hollen meeting with Abrego Garcia. They have edited the headline with red ink handwriting to say “ Senator meets with deported ms-13 illegal alien in El Salvador who’s never coming back.”

The only appropriate response to this is impeachment and removal from office. Every moment the political press spends spinning out theories about 2026 and immigration polling is a minute they are not spending asking Republicans in Congress about their plans to enforce the rule of law

This guy has family members. He has friends. He has neighbors. People may know him from church or softball or their kids’ hockey league or the corner store.

I hope they all see this photo. I hope they all recognize him.

Harvard has set an example for other higher-ed institutions - rejecting an unlawful and ham-handed attempt to stifle academic freedom, while taking steps to make sure students can benefit from an environment of intellectual inquiry, rigorous debate and mutual respect. Let’s hope others follow suit.

On a day when the administration’s conduct hit stunning new lows, it’s really important to see institutions like Harvard (represented by major law firms) stepping up to fight back

When this is over, U.S. rights abusers must be tried for crimes against humanity Escalating reports of human rights crimes from Kristi Noem's propaganda to ICE cruelty must be wiped clean with justice.

I want them all unmasked. I want Noem, Homan, and Miller to someday be tried for their crimes against humanity. Ditto for the ICE agents and other officers who abuse innocent tourists, college students, and refugees

When all this is over, I want justice. My column www.inquirer.com/opinion/comm...

I’m not kidding; this is DOGE at work; multiple US citizens getting notices that they just leave the country because USCIS is revoking their humanitarian parole.

Some personal news: the Department of Homeland Security has given me, an immigration lawyer born in Newton, Massachusetts, seven days to leave the U.S. Does anyone know if you can get Italian citizenship through great-grandparents?

This is how it's done.

A strong and principled response by WilmerHale to the illegal Executive Order attack - a form of attempted government intimidation declared unconstitutional by a federal judge.

This is how to guard the rule of law.

Bea Arthur enlisted in the Marines in 1943, whether Pete Hegseth can handle that fact or not. Fuck these losers.

The Paul Weiss response will be the common response among Big Law. Perkins Coie is the outlier.

Law firms are fundamentally conservative institutions and will happily ferret out and fire every Black attorney if their clients allow it. The only reason they're diverse is their clients' DEI goals.

He once hurt a neighborhood. Now, all he wants to do is give back. How a man uses fitness, friendship and faith to give back to a neighborhood he’s wronged before.

This news cycle sucks, but this story doesn’t. If you read anything today, please take a minute to read this piece that @jasminevaughnhall.bsky.social and I worked on these last few weeks.
