Scientists invented a fake disease. AI told people it was real
Bixonimania doesn’t exist except in a clutch of obviously bogus academic papers. So why did AI chatbots warn people about this fictional illness?

Here's the paper:

YouTube's notes have never been spotted in the wild? Wild!
For true believers in a "narrative" there will always be another example when a particular story gets fact checked.
And even disproven or unproven stories that are part of a narrative can still be cited or referenced to signal belief in the narrative or group membership or allegiance or ...
The examples in this paper muddle up the definition between "narrative" and "individual story". An individual story is fact checkable. A "narrative" isn't.
"Sharpies" --> vote counts were not actually affected. Does that disprove the narrative that "the election was stolen"? Far from it.
Pretty much like Meta, then :-)
Rookie numbers :-)
You can't fact check wider narratives (there will always be another example, just because this one story is fake doesn't mean the wider thing is...), but you sure as hell can poke holes and sink the individual "stories" that support them.
But this paper studies three false "facts" (Hogg is a crisis actor, there is a pee tape, the lottery manure story is real news) and calls them "narratives".
I'd say "mass killings are staged to 'take our guns'", "Trump is compromised by Russia" and "bosses are asses" are the "narratives" here.

Grok can't believe Trump's real post is actually real...

This fact checking day, @leadstories.com agrees with... Donald Trump and Elon Musk?
Well, kind of... read on!
"We express our readiness to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait. We welcome the commitment of nations who are engaging in preparatory planning."
--> A lot of wiggle room there... "appropriate efforts" can go from "strongly worded letter" to "full on war"...
Uh oh, @archive.org is down.
Fact checkers hardest hit...
Wait, what?
Thanks @bsky.app !

I hope that if there's one thing that this Iran conflict and the explosion of online misinformation about it has laid bare for most people is the significance of content verification and fact-checking in the digital age.
AI cannot replace human verification, at least not just yet.
President Donald Trump accused Iran of using Al-generated disinformation and media manipulation to spread false claims about attacks on US military assets. Trump said reports of damaged US refuelling planes and a burning USS Abraham Lincoln were fabricated, asserting that Iran's military narrative is being amplified by what he called "fake news" media outlets. He also suggested that some media organisations spreading such reports should face serious legal scrutiny #UnitedStates #DonaldTrump #Iran #aircrafts #damage Donald J. Trump ® @realDonald Trump Iran has long been known as a Master of Media Manipulation and Public Relations. They are Militarily ineffective and weak, but are really good at "feeding" the very appreciative Fake News Media false information. Now, A.I. has become another Disinformation weapon that Iran uses, quite well, considering they are being annihilated by the day. They showed phony "Kamikaze Boats," shooting at various Ships at Sea, which looks wonderful, powerful, and vicious, but these Boats don't exist — It's all false information to show how "tough" their already defeated Military is! The five U.S. Refueling Planes that were supposedly struck down and badly damaged, according to The Wall Street Journal's false reporting, and others, are all in service, with the exception of one, which will soon be flying the skies. Buildings and Ships that are shown to be on fire are not — It's FAKE NEWS, generated by A.I. For instance, Iran, working in close coordination with the Fake News Media, shows our great USS Abraham Lincoln Aircraft Carrier, one of the largest and most prestigious Ships in the World, burning uncontrollably in the Ocean. Not only was it not burning, it was not even shot at — Iran knows better than to do that! The story was knowingly FAKE and, in a certain way, you can say that those Media Outlets that generated it should be brought up on Charges for TREASON for the dissemination of false information! The fact is, Iran is being deci…
Iran? Spreading disinformation and war propaganda? No!!
AI content...manipulating the discourse..on X??!!!
FAKE NEWS MEDIA amplifying it on social media? Surely a Community Note will fix that... (in 14 hours)
If only we had, idk, agencies & partnerships & verification tools for such things.
Sinds de ganzen fact checkers hebben is het veel moeilijker geworden om ze nog iets wijs te maken...
Google's AI summary takes a satirical story about Adjoa Andoh blasting LotR for "blackface" and takes it at face value:
