Alberta Justice Minister curtailed election regulator when Sam Mraiche was under investigation Mickey Amery’s legislation shortened watchdog’s window of time to pursue sanctions for alleged political finance violations

SCOOP: Alberta Justice Minister Mickey Amery curtailed Elections Alberta's power to penalize when Sam Mraiche was under investigation.

Pattern? Justice Minister Mickey Amery limited an Elections Alberta investigation related to Sam Mraiche. The UCP refused to extend the term of Auditor General Doug Wylie who is investigating Mraiche. UCP also refused to fully cooperate with Wylie, and the inquiry of former Judge Raymond Wyant.

The rest of the bill is the UCP changing the goal posts as the walls are closing in. RED FLAGS IN ALL THIS.🟥

My name is _____, and I'm calling to say that I'm opposed to Bill 23. It prohibits citizen initatives for two years of a regular term, repeals deadlines for governments to address successful petitions, allows biased lawyers to access personal information that Elections Alberta has a duty to protect, and changes the rules of disclosing severance packages for high-earning public sector workers, including eliminating the need to publish severance agreements for former public sector workers.

Mickey Amery claims the government will ensure our democracy is one of trust and openness, but this bill erodes our rights while erasing transparency from the government. Vote no on Bill 23.

Thank you.

Worth mentioning: in my email to Smith (and the ever absent Mickey Amery), I stated that I was an immigrant who had received citizenship back in 2025 and was firmly opposed to the referendum. There is no acknowledgement of Smith's call for immigrants, AND no acknowledgement of my position.

Good day:

Thank you for writing to me about the fall referendum on immigration and constitutional reform. I appreciate hearing your views.

Alberta has long enjoyed a strong economy and a high quality of life unsurpassed anywhere. Our prosperity, and the policies that enable it, attract people from across the country and around the world who make valuable contributions to our communities.

Welcoming newcomers has been a part of our story from the very beginning; however, the immigration policies of the federal government over the last five years have put tremendous pressure on our classrooms, emergency rooms and social support systems. Unsustainable immigration combined with unstable oil prices are driving untenable budget deficits – not just here but across the country.

According to Statistics Canada, last fall Alberta had an estimated 281,857 non-permanent residents. That’s more than the combined populations of Lethbridge, Red Deer and Spruce Grove – and it’s costing Albertans an estimated $2.6 billion a year.

It’s no surprise that through the Alberta Next Panel, one issue most often raised by participants was the pace of immigration and its impact on our ability to provide the services Albertans rely on. We also heard that Albertans have other legitimate grievances with the federal government, and that they would like to see areas of provincial jurisdiction respected so our province has more opportunity to leverage its strengths and make life better for Albertans.

Alberta’s government has a solid plan to address financial challenges. In the long term, we will continue to grow the Alberta Heritage Fund to $250 billion by 2050. In the medium term, we will double energy production to increase our resource revenues. In the short term, we will address the unsustainable levels of immigration we have experienced.

My colleagues and I believe every Albertan deserves a direct say on important policies that affect our economy, our public services, and our province’s future. That’s why, on October 19, Alberta will hold a provincial referendum that asks citizens if they support reducing immigration to sustainable levels and if they support working with other provinces to amend the Constitution to increase Alberta’s sovereignty within a united Canada.

I am confident in the judgment of Albertans on these issues and I look forward to receiving their decisions on the nine referendum questions.

Thank you again for taking the time to write.

Sincerely,

Honourable Danielle Smith
Premier of Alberta

Raise your hand if you got a reply from Danielle Smith's office today about immigration referendum. The response I received blames immigrants on education, public healthcare, and support system problems in Alberta. No acknowledgement Smith called for these immigrants to come here. #abpoli #ableg

Once again, we want to thank everyone who has supported our efforts to recall the Minister of Justice and Calgary-Cross MLA Mickey Amery. The past three months were tiring, but we don't regret a single moment of it. We're going to keep fighting for our families, our neighbours, and our community.

Bill 206 - Calling Out the UCP’s Refusal to Support Albertans With Disabilities YouTube video by David Shepherd

Alberta is one of only two provinces that doesn’t have accessibility legislation to help ensure people with a disability are able to fully participate in our communities.

The UCP want to keep it that way by voting down Bill 206, the Accessible Alberta Act.
