Eine dieser "Einritzungen" (dry-point glosses), die Nievergelt entdeckt hat, ist sogar in Ogam! Aber nicht in Otfrid, wenn ich mich richtig erinnere.
Ja.
The Celtic formation that belongs here is the Proto-Celtic reduplicated formation *dedmV- < *dʰedʰ₁mo- (exact formation unclear), reflected in OIr. gen. sg. deidmea "law, usage", Welsh deddf "rite, decree, law"; Old Breton domot "rite" is perhaps from a related *dedmāto-.

...comes from the very prolific Indo-European root *dʰeh₁- "to put", which occurs in countless words for things that are judged, set up, established etc.

Two apocalyptic articles in the @irishtimes.com today. One about rapture theology (www.irishtimes.com/opinion/an-i...)
& one about Doomsday (www.irishtimes.com/culture/2026...). Just to put the latter into perspective, Proto-Germanic *dōma- m. "verdict, judgement, evaluation"...

My last active exposure to cuneiform was 35 years ago, so I beg to be forgiven.
It is absolutely absurd that in the year 2026, there are emojis for no cycling and no pedestrians 🚳🚷 but no emoji for no cars 🚗.
Never mind how there are emojis for fuel pumps ⛽ but none for solar panels or wind turbines...
Madness.

The Manuscript of the Week is RIA MS 23 P 10(iii). This 15th century medical manuscript contains a translation of the major part of Book 1 of the Rosa Anglica of John of Gaddesden, with occasional pieces from Bernard of Gordon and Gilbert the Englishman interspersed.
Our annual Noel O’Connell Memorial Lecture, jointly organised with the Irish Literary Society, will be given this year by Nollaig Ó Muraíle on 'James Hardiman and his manuscript collection in the British Library’ at the Irish Cultural Centre, Hammersmith, on Thursday, 28 May 2026 at 7.30 p.m.
Saghas tautological is ea é Ciar "black" + dubh "black" ar "Blackhorse" . 😉
An-suimiúil. Ní raibh a fhios agam é sin. Cruthú bunaithe ar SG cíar "dorcha, dubh" agus ar an iarmhír bhaininscneach -sech atá ann. Focal eile na SG ar an lon dubh baineann atá fianaithe i dtéacs luath, is ea é lonach* nó luinech* dil.ie/30630.
Eala sa duga tirim.

On alternating days, the algorithm/AI behind FB thinks that I'm interested in all kinds of things that in normal life I'd give 💩 about. Just ignore FB. It's a technological aberration based on the misapprehension that human interest can be predicted on seconds spent hovering over random posts.

...a compound of the verbal root of the Old Irish verb do·eipen "to excise, cut out" (< Celtic *to-exs-bī-) + cath "battle" (< Celtic *katu-). If this analysis is correct, the name means something like "he who cuts out the battle" or maybe "he who cuts his way through battle".

Is dóigh gur gá "comparative historical programming linguistics" a fhorbairt le go mbeadh IS in ann cláir ársa a thuiscint...
Go raibh 💯0 maith agat, a Aonghuis! Táim sásta a fheiceáil go bhfuil an chartlann go fóill slán sábháilte ann mar a raibh sí riamh. Ach is dóigh nach bhfuil na hinnill chuardaigh nua ábalta sean-rudaí mar sin a amsiú... IS abú!
