The Clearing is, on average, a few hundred miles in diameter, and roughly circular. Its only border is the forest surrounding it. Most of its population is terrified of the forest, and lives in the central region where the arch trees are visible only as distant silhouettes in the sky. Maggie's town, West Meadow, is considered as close as a settlement can get to the woods without its inhabitants suffering anomalous effects. It rests on the edge of what people call "the outer mile". Getting any closer induces confusion and terror in most. The forest is understood by the Oneiric community to be holy - a domain of God itself. The scientific community views the woods as something alien, and studies it to try and harness its supernatural properties for the betterment of the Clearing's people. Faith and Science are not opposed in this setting, and in fact they often work together despite seeing the world inherently differently. Both have tangibly improved the lives of their people and bettered civilization in equal measure. Both are vital. The "conflict" in this world is that the Clearing is shrinking slowly. Ancient villages that once sat comfortably outside the outer mile are now near the trunks of the arch trees, unapproachable and lost to people, overgrown and nearly forgotten. Everyone in The Clearing is terrified about this.
