It is SO unpleasant

we are at $3,000 in just an hour and a half, almost halfway to the $7,000 goal!
help us help two families get their needs met and pay their rent!
As always, if you're a city of LA employee who wants to talk about how this budget will impact your job, and, more importantly, how prioritizing megaevents will impact your ability to deliver basic services, I'm on Signal at awalkerinla.99 or you can text my Google Voice at 323 207 5607
I secured some funding last year to revive the Stevie Wilson DIY Young Artists Residency. I’m excited to announce that applications are open today until May 11 for young artists (ages 16-24) directly impacted by criminalization, policing, or punishment.
Construction for Enbridge's Line 5 oil pipeline has started in northern Wisconsin.
Anishinaabe leaders are raising alarms about the threats to the water & covert police deals in the state.
A rally against Line 5 is being held today in downtown St. Paul outside the Army Corps building at 4:30 pm.
I would also <3
I will also say that this question of how to move from "acute" to "chronic" organizing is one that I'm also really challenged by and grappling with right now (including thru writing, though mine is very rough) & one that I've seen lots of groups be challenged by! Would love to be in the loop somehow
<333 that lifts my heart, thank you Anne
Oh yeah you should also do that. Thank you Laura, I literally forgot my own book! I'm not sure the book as a whole will suit what you're looking for for this particular group, but I think Ch 6-8 have some exercises that would pair nicely with the kind of thinking you want to invite people into
They're a little more nuts and bolts about "what are we going to do, how, and why," & it might help people to see how others have grappled with these questions in a shorter, more focused form
The recs I'm seeing in the thread all look pretty good! I'm also wondering if you might want to check out some shorter, more meta stuff like the Combahee River Collective Statement, Jo Freeman's "The Tyranny of Structurelessness," & one or two of Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha's essays
The family is also a very dear and beloved organizer and his wife, I wish he could be public because we could raise it in a heartbeat!
it's a big ask—$7,000. and no one, neither the family or the contractor, can be public. so i guess I would make the fundraiser?
$5,000 of the $7,000 is labor, and would pay his rent for his family of 5 for almost 3 months.
it feels like a good opportunity to help two families.
question:
a family I know paid rent for their immigrant neighbor as he was out of work for during the ICE surge.
he still needs help. he is a contractor. the family needs an urgent bathroom repair and can't afford his rent this month. BUT he has the skills to do it.
could we crowdfund this?
Penalty kicks give you way too much time to prepare! I am starting to think that what I might be picturing is just a volley (in any sport that has volleys) where the other player is a lot better and faster than I am
But so many of these are so great and they're going to be the perfect comparison for *something*, so I'm stashing them away in a file of their own!
I'm learning so much today! "Frozen rope" is just a fantastic image. But I think @dumplingmenace.bsky.social was right in saying that baseball might not be the sport for this *specific* comparison--the pace is different than what I was originally trying to convey
We're tracing U.S. fossil fascism in a quick 3-part @drilledmedia.bsky.social miniseries (ep 2 drops tomorrow), from WWI to the Red Line Agreement to now. Important context for the current moment! drilled.media/podcasts/dri...
"energetic class" feels close but is too easily mistaken for either a TTRPG designation or some new age phrenology shit
Pretty sure the house wrens in my backyard would use Nextdoor if they could though
Yeah, maybe a different sport would help? What I am looking for is a situation where a lot of the same, difficult-to-intercept thing is coming at you repeatedly and you have to intercept it. Is that tennis, are we looking at tennis? I know less about tennis than I do about baseball
Low altos, hell yeah
I'm also maybe especially sensitive to it bc my book has not sold hugely? It's a good book and I stand by it, & people who do read it seem to find it useful, but the scams really reinforce the "no one REALLY wants to read this" feeling!
That's delightful!
This author scam shit hurts my fucking feelings! It makes me feel like I'm in 7th grade & like no one who said they wanted to hang out with me could possibly be telling the truth! This is partly because of the kind of 7th grade I had (& the kind of 7th grader I was, i.e. awful) but still!
Another day, another "book club" scam. Please know that if you & a bunch of other real people would like to read my book together & talk with me about it I would work hard to make that a fun & interesting time! www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/kate-...
So what I'm loving about your answers & the others so far is that they're all phrases--I can visualize them, even as a non-fan, but they're v specific & take a bit longer to say than "curveball" & also they're maybe not something where you'd get a lot in succession, even from a skilled batter?

You can eat the redbud blooms! You wouldn't want to eat a ton from a city tree bc of lead, but a few won't hurt you.
