This deep image shows the unusual galaxy NGC 3109, located 4.34 million light years away in the direction of the constellation of Hydra.
NGC 3109 is a dwarf barred spiral galaxy, similar to the Large Magellanic Cloud, and has an approximate diameter of 25,000 light years. It is oriented almost edge-on from our vantage point and contains a large amount of hydrogen gas. For this image I collected over 14 hours of H-Alpha exposure in addition to the LRGB, and as a result the hydrogen clouds are clearly visible as spectacular red HII emission regions scattered throughout the galaxy. The emission is caused by vigorous star formation and many blue giant stars and clusters are visible in the galaxy. It also hosts an unusually high number of planetary nebulae and a significant amount of dark matter but does not seem to have any well defined galactic nucleus.

NGC 3109 was discovered from South Africa by John Herschel on March 24, 1835. It is a member of the Antlia-Sextans Group which also includes the very small Antlia Dwarf galaxy. Studies of the gas in the Antlia-Sextans group members indicate that NCG 3109 and the Antlia Dwarf had a gravitational interaction in the past, about 1 billion years ago.
The group is thought to be either the most distant members of our Local Group of galaxies, or perhaps be the nearest other galaxy group outside of the Local Group.

A new picture of NGC 3147 from Hubble, comprised of data collected very recently, some of which was taken just a couple of weeks ago. This is in near-infrared and visible light, so the dust lanes look extra reddish. There's a certain transparency to the disk showing reddish background galaxies that I quite like, thanks to the near-infrared wavelengths in the red channel. It's one of those galaxies that fits nicely within the Hubble footprint, so this is a nearly complete picture of the brighter parts of the whole object.

I enhanced the saturation and clarity of the whole galaxy, and the center dust lanes have been greatly sharpened. The small hole left where the chip gaps intersected near the nucleus was filled with data cloned 180° from the other side of the nucleus.

This image was creating using data from the Proposal That Just Keeps Giving.
The Hubble Constant to 1%: Physics beyond LambdaCDM

Red: WFC3/IR F160W
Green: WFC3/UVIS F814W
Blue: WFC3/UVIS F555W

North is NOT up. It is 42.64° clockwise from up.

the most devastating experience for me is finding an amazing artist at a con and the artist Only has instagram on their business card. no bluesky no furaffinity, no tumblr or deviantart. Only instagram.

even if you go on a site just to post art then leave i beg people: please, crosspost your work

With nearly 70 hours of exposure I wanted to show the majestic barred spiral Messier 83 in all its glory. Visible here is the large halo extending far beyond the bright spiral arms, including sections of the northern stream that curves from the 10 o'clock position and outside the field of view, then enters the field again in the 2 o'clock position behind the bright blue star.
The colourful spiral itself is filled with bright red HII regions, enhanced here with 4.25 hours of H-Alpha exposure. Intricate swirling dust lanes trace the spiral arms and merge in a central maelstrom near the bright warmly glowing core.
To the left (East) of Messier 83 lies two smaller galaxies PGC 724525 and PGC 48132. These are much further away but show some interesting structures, particularly the upper one has several tidal tails that make it look like a tiny Star Wars TIE Fighter.
Visible near the top right is the small and faint dwarf galaxy dw1335-29 which was confirmed to be a companion of Messier 83 in 2018.

Messier 83 is classified as being an intermediate between normal and barred spiral galaxies. It is located in the southern constellation Hydra and is one of the show pieces of the southern sky, often referred to as The Southern Pinwheel. The distance to M83 is estimated to be some 15 million light years.
M83 is an example of a 'grand design' spiral galaxy with strongly defined spiral arms and shows many pink and blue knots throughout the spiral structures. The pink regions are massiv...

A digital illustration of simple line art and cell shading, done messily, of a unicorn woman front and back with white fur and purple hair pulled back in a messy loose bun. She has a black horn and ears, and is wearing a grey-purple tunic and sleeves with silver decorations dangling from it. She holds a sword in both sketches. Her eyes are blue with heavy black eyelids, and she has scars where her nipples used to be, and a muscular triangular upper body and buff arms.

My dishonored unicorn swordswoman, Lanita. Shamed by her former allegiance to a corrupt Monarchy, seeking to make amends for her past life. Highly skeptical now, she measures and trains the wills and hearts of would-be adventurers who seek to make things right in an unjust world.

For your Friday, a beautiful barred spiral galaxy flecked with blue dots and splotches of star formation, along with plenty of dust floating about. About half or so of the galaxy is contained within the frame. The rest didn't fit, unfortunately.

Data from the illustrious PHANGS-HST program were used to create this image.

I'm probably gonna open my commissions soon, to fund our friend's car repairs so she can drive us 1200km and help us get Gitta home!

For those interested, my comms will probably be around 25-50€ (sfw and nsfw) and I'll post a more thorough commission sheet as soon as I can!

watching NASA hit a very specific target in the big big ocean with a vehicle that just came back from outer space at 25,000mph definitely has me reflecting on the charter bus company that couldn't get me to a bus station

A digital illustration of three Destiny 2 OCs. From left to right: A scorn ravager, an exo warlock, and a harbinger subjugator. The warlock has his back facing the viewer while looking over his shoulder. He is holding Lubrae's Ruin. The scorn and subjugator are standing facing the viewer. The background is of the vault in the Sundered Doctrine dungeon.
