Curious: when a season starts as badly as this one, do players who signed in the offseason regret it? Does Bo Bichette wake up everyday and ask himself “what on earth did I do?”

For that matter, what about reporters covering the team for the first time? You could have signed anywhere!

Find it completely unfun when calls like this get overturned

I’m surprised ABS is so universally acclaimed. It slows the game down & takes away one of the things that made baseball a great proxy for real life: sometimes you get the call, sometimes you don’t, humans are fallible, etc. Maybe it’ll grow on me, I’m just surprised it’s being praised so universally

That’s weird

I do certainly hope that you’re right! Inevitably there are jobs that will arise that are hard/impossible to imagine today. I just hope there’s enough of them to compensate for the ones that are lost!

For me the difference is, if you play the previous disruptive tech (computer, internet, smartphone) to its logical conclusions, you have obsolete jobs but clear successors (taxi driver > uber driver). With AI, the tech’s logical conclusion leads to performance completely beyond human capability

At least, this is my fear. It’s not that all jobs disappear. A 1000 person law firm keeps 100 people - great! Still have 900 people out of work and there’s not really anything they can outcompete AI on

Right, but think about the before/after of removing the barrier to entry. Before LLMs, if I, as someone who can’t code, want to launch a business, I need to employ (PT or FT) ~2-3 people minimum. Then as the company scales the employee base does too. With LLMs, only a fraction of that hiring happens

I don’t understand the argument for AI job creation positivity. The technology will never be worse than it is today. It outperforms humans in one job function (SWE), will continue to improve and will forever be able to work more than humans. What’s the wedge where humans thrive in that equation?

You can’t grow the workforce through AI. It’s already replacing human labor. Every day it gets better, and it can work every second of the day. There is no knowledge work it can’t perform in time

Awesome to have you covering the Mets!

In the offseason we heard a lot about clubhouse issues last season. Clubhouses take time to mold, but I’m curious your early impressions. Who is filling vacated leadership roles, what’s the general vibe, is this a silly narrative altogether, etc?

I’m so confused. Is that what Italy scoring 5 runs means? Like, no matter what?

I say this as a fan of theirs: it would be really, really great if Boomer and Gio would cut the politics out of their act. It’s insufferable and completely played out - just focus on sports and check the politics at the door

I was at Game 5. After he threw the ball away, in the funereal quiet that engulfed the stadium, I stood up and shouted “I make that throw, Duda!”

I’m not a booer. I’m there to root positively for my team.

But it had to be said.

Honestly don’t think I ever saw Pete throw a ball with anything approaching that level of conviction, my god

A retired Minneapolis couple who had guns pointed at them by ICE in a church parking lot.

"They were obviously not trained at all. I've known many police officers in my life. These people were right off the streets."

"They had the professional demeanor of criminals."
