Teaching Training in Canadian Political Science PhD Programs Teaching Training in Canadian Political Science PhD Programs By Dax D’Orazio, University of Guelph, Elise Sammons, Rissa Reist, Noelle Jaipaul and Meagan Auer, University of Alberta Are graduate students prepared to teach? Our research provides a snapshot of teaching training and mentorship opportunities for Canadian Political Science PhD students. Based on a survey of graduate chairs, we find that most offerings are informal and occur outside departments.

Are grad students “licensed to teach”? Teaching training is a peripheral part of Political Science grad programs, yet cultivating strong teaching skills benefits students, universities, and the discipline. Read more:

Clemens, University of Wisconsin–Parkside and Michael A. Hansen, University of Turku This article examines a legislative politics simulation in which students deliberate as a legislative chamber and engage in assignment co-creation by collectively designing their final exam. Implemented across five semesters in face-to-face, hybrid, and fully online formats, the game promoted engagement, collaboration, and deeper reflection on institutional dynamics.

Gilmour, Midland College COVID, numerous protests, and the events of January 6, 2021 gave political scientists much to discuss in the classroom and presented many challenges. We recognized that our students needed a better understanding of historical events and more civic education. Then came the 2023 Texas legislative session that banned diversity, equity and inclusion offices in Texas higher education.
