Japanese feature phones on a table at MAGFest
Are you at MAGFest? Want to try some preserved keitai games? You're in luck! Come to the Museum/LAN Room and look for @unabandonware.bsky.social's table with 20+ Japanese feature phones! Unabandonware is one of the foremost keitai game preservationists, and she'd love to tell you all about them!
A lineup of Japanese flip phones with information sheets describing what they are and what games are available on each.
I also need to highlight someone else’s contribution to the Magfest museum this year: a slew of Japanese keitai with games on them! These were staples of Japanese gaming pre-smartphone, and it’s rad to see them presented here on their original hardware.
Thanks to some lucky keitai junk lots from @yuvi.app, over 60 keitai games were preserved over the past few days! My video has some highlights:
- Metal Claw, a Virtual On i-mode clone from 2004
- POP'N BALL, a freeware (?) platformer with cute sprites
- Lots of tactics RPGs, like Neo Deserters
The i-mode demo of #FFVII Before Crisis was preserved by Cuebus and @yuvi.app! The demo contains the entirety of Chapter 1. Last year, Kraze preserved the EZweb demo. The i-mode demo contains more features, like save data transfer and functional Materia Camera.
Major advancement in i-mode game emulation! In just one month, GuyPerfect created a Yamaha MA-2/3 audio implementation system, allowing us to listen to #Gradius NEO/NEO Imperial's soundtrack as it sounded on original hardware. Both games now have near-perfect sound emulation... (1/2)
I finally did it... What a tremendous task this was. But I fully converted the W51h build of Before Crisis to Doja code. Some things to still fix, but wow, seeing this just makes me so damn happy.
Yuvi made a huge breakthrough with preserving FFVII Before Crisis! He was finally able to convert the EZweb demo (all of chapter 1) with our i-mode copy (partial rescue and training modes). EZweb games run on BREW and i-mode games run on DoJa, so this was a major conversion.
I would like to point out that I wasn't the author of the dump. It was given by our lovely member of keitaiwiki. I merely processed the dump.

Today is the first April Fool's Day since the MOBILE PHONE version of Dragon Slayer 4 was able to run. It hasn't been a year yet.

An anonymous user preserved a COMPLETE copy of Xenosaga: Pied Piper and Lost Chronicle! Lost Chronicle was Namco's original i-mode RPG. Pied Piper was a previously-lost #Xenosaga spinoff, with 3 chapters and an original story. @valakturtle.bsky.social has already working on an English patch!
An anonymous user preserved #Tales of Breaker (trial version) and a partial version of Star Ocean Blue Sphere (i-mode remake)! These are server reliant, so functionality is very limited. You can explore one map in Blue Sphere, and we're working on fixing Tales of Breaker. More to come soon!

Waretsuku ga Horu Mon (吾作が掘るモン) is a keitai-exclusive #Sega game that was preserved last month. You play as a construction worker who has to save his daughter, who's been kidnapped by evil land sharks! You can pick up floor tiles and throw them at enemies!
