In general i am also fairly clueless about a lot of this stuff, mostly read enough atproto explainer blogposts until i got an OK mental model, but TL;DR yes I think you should be hosting your own PDS if you can.

The main bottleneck is usually the AppView, that is, the service that collects information like "who are the other people who have liked a post" & the main following feed. Services like reddwarf.app have to be explicitly designed to avoid relying on it. Not that it's impossible tho.

It Depends™️. Logging in? Yes, a self-hosted PDS will allow you to complete the OAuth authentication flow with zero involvement from the main bsky instance. Having the atmophere app in question work? Depends on how much other infra from bsky the app uses.

/xrpc: obvious
/oauth: allow the PDS service to handle all the oauth endpoints
/@atproto: allow the PDS to serve assets
/.well-known: allow other services to discover that the PDS supports OAuth

I may still be missing something but it seems this is enough to log in w/ other services now so
