the nice thing is it's a symbiotic relationship, mainstream culture produces underground culture and vice-versa, believing that people have a moral obligation to care about one or the other is an ageless discourse we are all trying to find community with people who share our values and interests
and people who don't fundamentally hold it in contempt don't empathize with how unpleasant it is to live like this
even when we are of similar minds about things ideologically, people often have totally different instincts and intuitions about where to spend one's finite attention, and it can be exhausting especially when it comes to pop culture because it's unavoidable
I think a lot of people just think that celebrity culture is a fact of life, certainly of our current civilization, and therefore necessary, even good, to engage with, for reasons that are probably more or less rational to said people
