He’s also a great photographer and recently he exhibited a really fantastic collection of photos taken around national parks in the southwestern U.S.

Every time I run into Malcom and ask what he’s been up to, it usually involves a big home improvement project he’s doing himself. As a result, his home is beautiful.

I met Malcom on Christmas Eve many years ago. That night we witnessed our very drunk, mutual friend get in a fist fight with an inflatable Santa Claus. Malcom made sure that friend got home safely.
And Sam is always championing progressive causes and letting other people know about resources and how they can help. Definitely an A+ human being.

Seen here wearing an owl mask she made for Rat City Art Walk, Sam is a super talented photographer and musician. She plays bass (and theremin!) and takes amazing photos of wildlife and bands. Sam’s photos of birds of prey, especially owls, are amazing!
I miss seeing him around Seattle, but I know I can always find him in Portland. Probably anywhere there is a dog or cat to pet.

But my favorite photos of his are all the ones he took around Capitol Hill of all the neighborhood regulars. Those photos are a treasure and we are lucky he shared them with us. And as a vocalist, David turned any band he was in into a force of nature.

David Choe’s photos of bands are fantastic! I see a lot of people dragging the shutter and creating swirls of color these days, but he was taking photos like that at the Funhouse almost 20 years ago.
Whether it’s been connecting through music, history, or just mutual friends, it’s been a lot of fun getting to know him. Grant played drums in the super rad band, X-Eyes.
Polaroid photo of Grant Grays looking cool as usual.

Grant is one of the few people I know who looks forward to new episodes of Frontline on PBS as much as I do. I met Grant through my friends Katie and Dylan when Gold Sweats played an outdoor show at the roller rink in the summer of 2022.
The band that eventually became Future Tense was born. Before that, I’d been a fan of Alicia’s bands like Lovesick Empire and Nightmare Fortress. Playing in a band with Alicia was so much fun. I love that she is just always making all kinds of different music. It’s super inspiring and motivating.

In the summer of 2019, I was playing music and working on new songs with some friends. We were looking for someone to sing and when Alicia came to practice and we ran through a song for the first time, it was electric.
These days he’s playing guitar and singing in Glose and playing bass in Old Iron. I love that he’s still making music and hope I get to see him perform for a long time.

Whether it’s a tiny stage like the Bad Juju, a big stage like the Showbox or Skychurch, or anything in between, Aaron owns every stage he steps onto. The man exudes confidence and plays guitar like he’s made a Robert Johnson-esque deal with the devil.

Aaron Lundborg, musician. The first time I saw the Ruby Doe was in 2001 and they immediately became one of my all-time favorite bands.
Sadly, some of the people that were a part of all of that are no longer with us. But Zach is still here and still making music.#zachdavidson #vendettared #polaroid
In January of 2002, I went with the band and we all got matching tattoos to celebrate their record contract with Epic Records. In the summer of 2003, every time I turned on MTV, the video for “Shatterday” was playing. It was such a wild and magical time.
Within minutes of meeting him, he told me he was going to start a band and they would put out records and tour all over the world. And then I watched him do exactly that. I saw Vendetta Red play their first show at Gibsons in January of 1999.

In October of 1998, Zach was the first person I met when I moved to Seattle. He had just moved here from Bakersfield, CA. We worked together at the Sam Goody that was on the corner of 3rd and Pike.
I’m also a very big fan of the work Justin does as a union organizer. Workers unite!

Justin Foley, musician and union organizer. Justin plays guitar and yells in a band called the Austerity Program. They are one of my all-time favorite bands. The lock screen on my phone is the artwork from their Black Madonna record. They make me want to make music.
Keep making music. Also, Sohrab’s instagram is just about the most Brooklyn thing I’ve ever seen. It’s fantastic!

One of his band mates in Savak is an acquaintance of mine I’ve known for almost 20 years. Sohrab recently helped put together a book of Rick Froberg’s artwork. The book tour for that book brought him to Seattle and that gave me the opportunity to meet him and talk to him for a second.

Sohrab Habibion, musician. Sohrab’s bands include Edsel, Obits, and currently, Savak. The power of music to bring people together is pretty amazing. I’d never met Sohrab, but I tried to see Obits every time they came to Seattle. I think I only missed them once.
But Kennedy has never stopped tearing it up behind the mic. His new band, Benzo, is great.

I met Kennedy a short time later, probably at the Funhouse or the Comet, maybe the Greenhouse. These days that tornado energy is much more focused. Last spring he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications from UW and now he’s working on his master’s.
Polaroid portrait 55/1000
The first time I saw this guy screaming into a microphone was 2011. The band was Monogamy Party. He was shirtless and rolling around on the floor of the Black Lodge as the rest of the band cranked out equally chaotic noisy music. He was like a tornado.
When we would take photos of Halo, to get him to look towards the camera, we would ask him, “did you see Skippy?”
#skippyking #xsuns #polaroid #polaroiditypefilm
And there’s the time Brandy’s purse, wallet, keys, and car were stolen and Skippy rushed over to change the locks on our house. But the most important thing I want people to know about Skippy is that my dog, Halo, absolutely loved him. And Halo only loved a handful of people.
