In these four illustrations, we see the fairy tales and folklore from Scandinavia in particular, Sweden. Bauer’s art was famous for exploring the trolls, princesses, forests, gnomes, & characters of Swedish folklore and fairy tales. In these images, we see a princess and a witch in a forest, a boy and a troll, a bear and a princess, and a girl with numerous giant trolls behind her. Bauer love to use dark browns & black shades, and warm, chestnut neutrals to offset the brightness/glow of his main protagonists…. But he loved to offer a Gothic feel to his Swedish forests & I did not shy away from foregrounding the ancient beauty of mercurial & mysterious trolls in their habitats.
