Oh, no! Country Joe McDonald has died, aged 84. His antiwar anthem, Feel Like I’m Fixin’ To Die Rag, was core to the soundtrack of my childhood. Much later, I had the pleasure of playing (and singing!) the song with Joe a number of times. RIP, dear man.

I am super grateful and happy to share with you what the incredible @mariaressa.bsky.social has to say about #PROPHECY:
“Oxford philosopher Carissa Veliz traces the invisible forces that are insidiously manipulating us, stealing our data—and our agency. 1/
Celebrate the life of Bob Weir on Saturday in San Francisco.
If you want to honor Bobby Weir, consider a contribution to Sweetwater Music, the concert hall Bobby founded that now operates as a non-profit.

If you would like to honor Bobby Weir, consider contributions to 2 orgs he was involved with:
1) Rex Foundation: the Dead created Rex 40 years ago to support causes that make the world better.
2) Sweetwater Music Hall: Bobby’s nonprofit venue

Microslop.
Pass it on.

I did not know Rob Reiner well, but met with him (and Michele) several times, played a gig where he emceed, and loved every film he was involved in. I am bereft.

I hope you everyone will watch this TEDx talk by @carissaveliz.bsky.social. She makes a point that most of us have not considered in years, if not decades. So important.

Oh, no! The brilliant Stax guitarist Steve Cropper has died. Best known for his role in Booker T & the MGs and The Blues Brothers, Cropper appeared on a huge number of soul hits. Truly one of the greatest guitarist ever. RIP, good sir!

Oh, no! Jimmy Cliff has died at 81. The soundtrack of The Harder They Come played all the time during my high school and college years. I saw him play with Widespread Panic at Lockn’ a few years ago. He was mesmerizing. Fare thee well, Jimmy C.

Oh, no! Donna Jean Godchaux-McKay, vocalist and lyricist with the Grateful Dead, has died at 78. She was integral member of the Dead during the 70’s, a period generally recognized as including many of the band’s seminal performances.
Fare thee well, Donna!

Thank you for sharing this, @bourgwick.bsky.social! I met Jerry (with Big Steve Parish) after soundcheck. They were late for dinner, so the interview was brief.
Jerry: Hey!
Me: Hey!
That was it!
Phils lost 2-1 to LA in 11 innings. Game ended on a soul crushing, bases loaded E1 by Orion Kerkering.
Game only went to extras because of a missed call by HP ump.
Both starters were magnificent. All the pitchers were great. Phils only managed 4 hits in 11, which won’t win games.
Season is over.
Phils top LAD, 8-2, to keep the NLDS alive. After 2 horrible games, offense came alive.
Aaron Nola started and survived a misplayed 3B by Mookie in T1.
Ranger Suarez gave up a 1st pitch HR then shut down LA for 5 innings for the W. Schwarber had 2 HRs, JT had 1. Turner 3H, Harper & Bohm 2.
Phils lose to LA, 5-3. Too many BB by pitchers. Not enough H by offense. Phils got 3 off Ohtani in 2nd, then shut down.
Cristopher Sanchez was great until 6th. David Robertson put first two on in 7th. Strahm got Ohtani and Betts, but gave up 3R HR to Teoscar.
Bader hamstring is disaster for Phils.
Moonalice will be joined by drummer Jay Lane (of Dead & Company) for our set at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass on Sunday, 12:25pm on the Swan Stage. Jay will be double drumming with our main man, John Molo. This will be special!

Cleveland Guardians are a special team. They have as impotent an offense as has played in postseason. Lost game 1 to Detroit because of two fielding mistakes. Today, CLE had 2 hits going into B8 in a 1-1 elimination game. They got 2 HRs to take a 6-1 lead. DET loaded bases in T9, but got 0 runs.
Oh, no! Jane Goodall, the primatologist whose frequent appearances in documentaries introduced so many of us to the wonders of chimpanzees, has died.
Rest in power, Dr Goodall!

Two Phillies. Would have been 3 had Wheeler lasted a couple more starts.
Cleveland Guardians came from 15.5 games behind to win AL Central. They finished with a record of 88-74, but somehow managed to give up 6 more runs than they scored.
Has any team ever won a division before with a negative run differential?
No team has come back from a bigger deficit, so why not?
When the season began, the NL East was expected to be the toughest division in baseball, w/ ATL, NYM and PHL all looking like powerhouses.
ATL was never competitive. Mets staged an epic collapse. Only the Phils made it to the postseason, as #2 seed.
NL Central sent MIL, CHI, CIN to the playoffs.
Phils walk off MIN in 10, 2-1. Cris Sanchez was brilliant for 5.2, starting with 21 consecutive strikes. Lou Trivino gave up the run, but bullpen shut down Twins. Kepler tied it w/ HR, Casty won it w/ SF.
Phils improved win total for 5th straight year. They face winner of LAD vs CIN in NLDS.
Phils lose to MIN, 5-0, ending their bid for the #1 seed in NL.
Former Phil Mick Abel — traded for Jhoan Duran — was brilliant. He got a ton of help from the HP umpire, who was awful, entirely to the benefit of Twins.
Ranger Suarez left T5 after getting hit in the thigh by a liner.
Per Jayson Stark of The Athletic:
Aaron Nola’s unique start tonight:
8 innings
2 hits
Homer
Triple
No singles
No doubles
Last pitcher with that line:
Pedro Martinez! On 8/14/2005
The only 2 others to do it in the wild-card era were knuckleballers!
Steve Sparks (2002) and Tim Wakefield (1995)
