a four panel comic. in the first panel, a robin hops along a trail saying "lovely!" in the second panel, the robin perches on a tree with pink flowers and says "beautiful!" in the third panel, they look up at a white flower and say "fantastic!" in the final panel, their eye is up close to a pink flower and they say "wow" repetitively.
do birds experience spring like we do? i like to think so. at least a little bit.

one of the coolest things about taking photography is how i can recall exactly where i was standing during every photo, even just quick shots that i took 6 years ago. i can remember the weather, even the time of day.
but i cant remember what i had for breakfast yesterday. mmmmmm.
every time my sicko little brain comes up with shit like this
may or may not be horrifying myself by starting to sift through 420gb of old wildlife/plant photos so i can upload a chunk of them to inat as reference photos, wish me luck
there is something particularly rewarding about making art from your own reference shots. professional-level photography skills not required!

a digital illustration of two sparrows perched on a dark branch
i used the grid method to create this illustration of an eastern towhee and their white-crowned sparrow friend from my own reference photos!

a grid is overlaid on the photo of an eastern towhee on the left. a drawing of the towhee is under the grid on the right.
slowly, the image forms like puzzle pieces coming together into one cohesive image. one reason that i continue to occasionally use this method 10 years into my professional illustration career is because it is sooooooo satisfying.

an image of two grids. a photo of an eastern towhee sits below the left grid. lines drawn within three squares appear within the right grid.
an image of two grids. a photo of an eastern towhee sits below the left grid. the outline of the bird appears within the right grid.
there are two common methods: filling in each square one at a time, or working from large shapes down to the finer details. i prefer the latter, but it's all up to you!

an image of two grids, both numbered on the columns and rows. a photo of an eastern towhee sits below the left grid.
the process is similar across digital and physical mediums.
we start by creating a grid on top of our reference, and a second grid on our drawing surface (procreate file, paper, bedroom wall, etc.)

you can draw with a grid.
yes, you. yes! you! and i'll tell you how!

everyone seems to run into the same couple problems when trying out macro photography, but thankfully, a bit of troubleshooting can get you great shots of bugs friends in no time. beccagoesoutside.ghost.io/beginner-mac...

We had three queens bumbling around in the yard a few days ago! It's wild how chilly it still is when they come out

my favorite birds are going absolutely bananas around the neighborhood on warm days. sparring and feasting and making madness. i just adore them.
