yeah i agree the whole concept of consensus is squishy, and the amount of weight we give it should account for whether funding is transparent/methodology is rigorous/mouthpieces are trustworthy, etc etc

and to be clear, i do believe scientific consensus is a powerful tool for shaping a worldview! lots of researchers are out there treading the fog and trying to uncover truth. i just think “trust the experts or else” is a cop mentality that ignores external forces on those experts
