For fuck's sake. It's just happened again.
😡
WTF! I was adding comments to a student's paper in Acrobat when it suddenly froze. Now the file has completely disappeared - it's not in the folder where I was editing it and it's not even in the recycle bin. @adobe.com
Hopefully last year's dropoff in stats was due to his elbow injury 🤞and hopefully that's completely healed 🤞
Never mind at events. I could use this in daily life!

Everyone ran a PB? Are we sure this isn't the athletic track from The Games?
I remember first encountering the concept of Hamming distances while sitting outside at Flinders University doing background reading for my Honours thesis on image compression. Coincidentally a very young Terence Tao was walking past at that very moment!
@timayres-minister.bsky.social, @jimchalmers.bsky.social , @jasonclaremp.bsky.social , would you, in this light, consider responding to this petition (which technically requested a response from the Minister by January 28, according to parliamentary rules)?

So I can go back to drinking strawberry Nesquik in hot milk without feeling shame?

The AI Safety Research Directory just posted an audio interview with me, exploring the relationship between multi-objective reinforcement learning and pluralistic alignment of AI systems www.youtube.com/watch?v=REZf...
So, yesterday we had two consecutive meetings scheduled over the lunch break, with food provided. Which made me wonder if that was the worst possible.
Turns out, yes: it is provably impossible to schedule more meetings in that time slot! This is called the No-Three-Lunch Theorem
The first workshop was my favourite part of Neurips in 2024. I'd encourage people to participate in this.

Workday, the product, is a crime.
As in: it should be a criminal offense for any organization, including my university, to pay for this product and require its use.
Oh nothing, just a peer reviewed paper my colleagues found...

"1 mL of the mass killing of an ethnic group was opposed to 20 mL of the skin sample and unprotected to light for 7 min."
Even AI knows what's wrong here, but @elsevierconnect.bsky.social doesn't.
On the upside, maybe NeurIPS in Sydney might be small enough to be bearable?
There's no need for me to ever write a blog post about my attitude to computers, because Julian Togelius has done it for me.
I remember how stunning it was at the time to hear speech in a computer game, even if it was only a few words. "Stay a while. Stay forever."
Great idea. I've already got two AI-hallucinated papers (titles) with my name on that I can submit :-)
DeepMind's RL team is hiring a research scientist: if you're passionate about RL, come work with us!
And if you know people who might be interested, please share:

Every time I share or send an emoji I feel like there is an older person watching me and silently judging me for using them at all.
Someone might want to proof-read that image :-)
I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if thousands of Squaxx dek Thargo suddenly had exactly the same reaction @2000ad.bsky.social
When shaping your research agenda, your objective is to find the weirdest niche possible that still has the potential to change everything.
