Depends what version of the show you watched. If it’s the original Japanese release then the music was created as the show progressed, so newer music was introduced throughout the show. That’s why you’d have noticed the difference

There is a Blu Ray release with the English Dub coming at some point this year in the USA. No idea if it’s getting released in any other regions. I’m hoping for a UK release though

And you are right that aside from the 3 missing licenced tracks. The re-edit is more complete in the sense that it allowed the producers to create more consistent motifs and themes throughout the show, using all of the music, where as in the initial releases the music was implemented more bit-part

Yep there are a lot of misconceptions about the music of Monster regarding the differences between the initial and later releases. Ranging from “licensing issues” to distributors like Netflix or Viz Media “changing the soundtrack”

When it was simply a creative choice by the producers of the show

The original Japanese TV broadcast and Japanese DVD release use a different soundtrack, mainly for production reasons (I.e the producers were working with a smaller set of tracks in those early releases because the music hadn’t been fully produced by that point, so they were constrained by only have a certain amount of music available for the earlier episodes, and as they continued production more and more music was created which the got used the later episodes.

The soundtrack was re-edited late in production once all the music for the show had been produced. They went over the entire show scene by scene and re-scored it with the benefit of all having all the music at their disposal and this re-edit superseded the original soundtrack and is the version of the soundtrack that has appeared on all Monster releases since 2006 (including Netflix and all language dubs).

Generally speaking most of the music that was in the original soundtrack is present in the re-edit, it’s just that those tracks play in a different scene. There are 3 licensed tracks in the original soundtrack that were replaced too and these are not present in the re-edit, likely because of the licensing fees and the producers no longer wanting to pay them. They also changed the ending credits music to an instrumental version of For the Love of Life where the original releases used the version with vocals.

Bit of a lengthy post so I’ve put it in an image

It’ll very likely use the final edit of the soundtrack which has been used on every release of Monster since 2006

This is great news. Is there any chance of you acquiring the rights to the full OST and releasing it? Monster has a brilliant soundtrack, unfortunately across the two volumes of the released OST there is still a lot of music missing from the show. It’d be great to see the full soundtrack released

European Nations should pressure UEFA to boycott the USA World Cup next year and host a replacement tournament in Europe instead, with invites for qualifiers from other regions.

It would have the added bonus of not having to stay up 'til daft o' clock to watch the matches
