Tomasz recommends Krtek the Mole and he also suggests you listen to our other Polish guest Hanna's episode to get a younger person's perspective: www.podbean.com/player-v2/?i...
An example of the way footnotes function in the polish editions of the books.
An example of the way footnotes function in the polish editions of the books.
Some open pages from a polish edition.
We also talk about translation and the different adaptations of the Moomin stories.
The two book volumes of the Polish complete Moomin stories. One is light red the other light teal. Both have simple designs with Moomin characters in white framed with pretty picture frames.
Our guest Tomasz talks us through some of the great wealth of history the Moomins have with Poland, the interesting musical benefits of a planned economy and his own terror of the fuzzy felt #Groke as a child.
The vinyl record of “Lato Muminkow”. A white square cover with a picture of Moomin Troll holding some colourful flowers on it with a red sun behind him and the track list written around him. And the black record, with a white central label in a plastic case beside the cover.
This guest episode is all about the Moomins in Poland!
What’s that you say? A bonus episode of The Podgoblin's Hat with Nina, Dave (me) and our guest Tomasz.

Thank you! We’re looking forward to finally getting it out!
But if we ever figure out an approach that incudes audience support I’ll let you know, I guess. Or at least we’ll announce it on the show!
That’s lovely to hear, and as someone who has had podcasts play that kind of role in my life it’s great to hear our plays that in yours. In terms of supporting the show that’s an interesting question! Not really. In some ways we made the show to be outside of that kind of dynamic.
Thank you! It means a lot to me (and to Nina) to hear that đź’ś
and she would like to point you all in the direction of her friend's art instagram: www.instagram.com/amselnest.art/
She recommends The Wind in the Willows, especially if you're a German speaker and can get your hands on the audiobook read by Harry Rowohlt; my podcast(!) Down to A Sunless Sea podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/d...
Valentina makes her own Moomin merch, like previous guest Mary did, and we've put pictures of all that on the social media for this episode.
The front cover of The Moomins and the Great Flood. A dark and messy watercolour showing a big Moomin like creature and a little Moomin like creature venturing into a dark forrest.
We talk about the absence of #Moominpappa in the Flood, and the unequal ways in which the parents in these stories are treated. Also, some little gems from the German translation regarding #Sniff, or, as he is known in this story, the Little Creature.
She never knew there were any other Moomin stories, or even any illustrations. She only found the books as an adult, after years of treasuring the one weird little fable that most of the rest of the fandom didn't even know existed.
A photograph of Valentina's CD of the Moomins and the Great Flood in German. The CD case is mostly pink, with some dark purples. Moomin walks under the beam of a lamp, which is also a flower. The case credits Tove Jansson as the author, Barbara Auer as the narrator, and says that the adventure is suitable for children aged between 3 and 7 years old. In the bottom right is the logo of Eltern Family magazine, who may have curated and sold this collection of audio books.
But never mind all that what about the episode that we have put out:
Valentina has a unique pathway into the #Moomins. She experienced just one story: The Moomins and the Great Flood, as an audiobook as a child.
We’ve been working away at the show in between periods of not being able to for various reasons. Before too long we’ll have another bonus episode and then we’ll be back with a bang with an 11 episode season (so twice the length of any we’ve put out before).
Granny Weatherwax picks earwax from her ear wearing a witches hat stuck full of hat pins and holding four playing cards. Next to the quote: Find the story, Granny Weatherwax always said. She believed that the world was full of story shapes. If you let them, they controlled you. But if you studied them, if you found out about them… you could use them, you could change them…
I know it’s been a while since we’ve had an episode out. And last year we only put out two bonus episodes but as Granny Weatherwax, a none Moomin character close to both of our hearts might say: We aten’t dead!
What’s that you say? A bonus episode of The Podgoblin's Hat with Nina, Dave (me) and our guest Valentina!

and I am listening along with the episodes as I read the books. It's been wonderful to listen in to the "book club," so to speak, of a storyteller I admire :)
The Family Tree is one of my favourite podcasts ever made, and when I finally got around to reading the Moomins this year a little memory pinged in the back of my mind and I thought, "Wait, didn't Dave Pickering do a show about the Moomins, too?" And to my joy it exists ++

There's a fair bit of chat about the Japanese animated cartoon adaptations. We talk about the way we love queer-coded things but wish that the queerness could be explicit in these beloved texts. Mary gives out excellent advice as #LittleMy.
Mary talks us through the cottagecore appeal of the Moomins and the popular but non-mainstream place they occupy in the USA. open.spotify.com/episode/71MI...
In a podcast first, we are interviewing a #Moomin fan who is still a teenager and discovered the #Moomins through Pinterest! podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/t...
Another bonus episode of The Podgoblin’s Hat is out! Wow! We are really spoiling you. I suggest really basking in it because looking at my summer schedule it’s going to be a while before the (already completely recorded) next season of the show comes out: podfollow.com/the-podgobli...
Mendel is wonderfully enthusiastic about free food growing all around is and recommends the Falling Fruit maps to find foraging opportunities near you. Nina has added the fig trees she mentioned in Ouseburn, if you're a local! fallingfruit.org
We chat about climate collapse as depicted in Comet in #Moominland, and the different characters' attitudes to it. We also chat about the different mushrooms #LittleMy picks in The Invisible Child, and how one might go about identifying and preparing them for eating.
