This is true once you get your permanent contract. But, getting there is quite a journey that the majority of the PhD students, including myself, have overlooked

A small observation about the high levels of depression among PhD students: one contributing factor could be that nobody knows how uncertain research is. This is especially problematic for PhD students as they tend to be more risk averse and they consider academic jobs less risky
