I do writing competitions for fun. In my last one, I had to write a ghost story. Six days into the eight-day assignment, my dad died. I managed to finish the piece anyway and submit.
So it’s satisfying to find out my story made the top five, and I’m going through to the next round.

It sometimes feels like you can drink from the news firehose or turn away from what's happening. But there is a secret third thing.
Was happy to contribute to this piece from my wonderful colleague @tonyelkins.com
Thanks to Press Forward's Tim Murphy and May Yang for the great conversation, and to the @knightfoundation.org for seeing what was happening, and jumping in quickly with support.
(Full disclosure: My work is supported by a grant from Knight)
What does it look like when funders "move at the speed of news"? It looks like this.
TL;DR: funders can (and should) plan ahead for crises, from major news stories to natural disasters, so they're ready to respond when something happens.
This is a good blueprint.

My partners for this session are the wonderful

In Chicago next week and interested in building great funder-newsroom partnerships? Come find me and let's grab coffee. ☕
Excited for this workshop at the ONA conference next week @journalists.org
We're going to be talking about:
🤔 How funders think about news organizations
💬 How to talk about your work in ways that will resonate with funders
💖 How to build a trusting relationship that will last beyond just one grant
On my way to Mississippi where I will run a workshop for local news leaders and avoid aggressive diseased monkeys on the loose, I guess.
Haha
Serious question for sports fans: how do you handle how emotional and stressful this all is and then just go about your lives for an entire season I just do not understand
I can’t tell you how discombobulating this all is as someone who mostly does not pay attention to sports and then is suddenly watching <waves hands wildly> all this
(Wretched film, my least favorite I’ve seen this year)
The Testament of Ann Lee made me incredibly happy … that I don’t live in the 18th century. Also, I was happy when it was over.
Yummmmm that sounds worth it
It is the glitter of the nut world
“Communities didn’t just hire more people and have more money to spend, they put those things together to fix roads and build new facilities aimed at supporting their populations and increasing public safety. “
Welcome!
Also just physically big. I think you can SEE it from the restaurant.
Looooong sigh.
Search result from Toronto.com story that reads “Toronto's newest restaurant will have Canada's largest retractable rooftop 3 days ago - Queens Harbour will be located at 245 Queens Quay W., along Toronto's waterfront.”
Story excerpt that says “Once you pass through the open kitchen, you can enter Queens Garden, a two-level area with a "custom-engineered" operable roof, which will be the largest in Canada, according to the Queens Harbour team.”
A picture of the Rogers Centre with a massive retractable roof.
Uh … guys … it’s literally a five-minute walk from the Rogers Centre, which has a pretty big retractable roof.
I always tear up. Always.
Haha, oh man. Doooo itttt.
Happy Canada Day, folks.

I haven’t seen this game since I was about 8 and I’ve never considered how odd the photo was before
The cover of the game Super Mastermind, with an old white man in a tuxedo seated with his hands folded in front of him and a younger Indian girl in a white sari standing beside him.
It’s been a while but what exactly is going on in this picture
I will never get over airport rules.
Just saw a man chase a glass of prosecco with a double whiskey. Sir, it’s 7 in the morning.
Oh thank you! Will fix.
