I saw this band live in Detroit. True chemistry, and some of Redman's most rewarding playing.
When You Catch the Fire's Glow
Sonny Rollins recorded "If Ever Would I Leave You," which includes one of his greatest studio improvisations, 64 years ago today on April 18, 1962, with Jim Hall, Bob Cranshaw, and Ben Riley. www.youtube.com/watch?v=XD_N...
Recorded 66 yrs ago, 4/17/60. I played this Jackie McLean tune with my band in Urbana. Familiar harmony ("Star Eyes" ) but truly quirky melodic construction & an ear-grabbing, stop-time bridge. Jackie wrote some unique songs! With Blue Mitchell/Walter Davis Jr/PC/AT

Great photo by Gus Powell accompanying today's @nytimes.com profile of Jay McInerney at age 71. Of course, it echoes the iconic Vintage Contemporaries edition cover of his breakout first novel in 1984.

A new reissue of "Falling in Love is Wonderful" is out Friday.

A huge fan. He is the sound of south side Chicago for me. I love the ones you mention. Also Groovin’ with Jug (with Richard Groove Holmes), Brother Jack Meets the Boss (with Brother Jack McDuff). Used to fall asleep to Preachin’ at low volume. Highly recommend the 2LP compilation Gentle Jug!
I also love Groovin' with Jug, and yeah , Gentle Jug is a peerless ballad collection -/ note it combines two of my favorites: Nice 'n Cool and The Soulful Moods of Gene Ammons.
Happy Birthday to one of my great heroes, Gene Ammons, born this day 101 years ago, 4/14/25 and gone far too young at age 49 in 1974. The sweetest spot on record is 1960-62. Roughly 20 LPs in that widow, including my faves: Jug, Nice 'n Cool, Boss Tenor, Soulful Moods (all in 4th row from bottom).
Blowing the blues away or, pace Albert Murray, Stomping the Blues ...
IMO no single player exemplifies the sound and feel of Chicago jazz than Jug. He just makes you feel good.

Happy 86th birthday to Herbie Hancock. What a gift that he's still out here doing it. "Flood" (1975) is one of his greatest records & incudes the best "Actual Proof" ever. The transition into it from "Maiden Voyage" at 7:20 is one of my favorite moments in music. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNGl...

Many thanks for creating this. Lots of fun!
... a friend captured video of Joe taking out his horn on a whim and improvising on "Body and Soul" for the spirits of the heroic masters who haunt the club, including the memory of the 24-year-old version of himself. www.facebook.com/reel/1272609...
🧵A beautiful moment. Joe Lovano, artist-in-residence of the 2026 Detroit Jazz Festival visits historic ed Baker's Keyboard Lounge in Detroit, where he first played at the beginning of his career a half century ago, likely with Lonnie Smith if memory serves. I wasn't on site yesterday, but ...
