Why this NASA climate scientist wants you to stay angry “I don’t think we rebuild science without getting mad.”

"I anticipated that our work would be questioned, but only because its implications were politically inconvenient. I never expected that science itself would come under attack."

Powerful statements from the brilliant scientist and communicator @drkatemarvel.bsky.social

But the fact that the energy imbalance is changing so rapidly and that we cannot fully explain it, is worrying. If anything, future warming estimates are likely to be revised upward. 12/n

In unpublished paper, we show that the current EEI trends point to substantially higher warming that estimated so far. Arguments for a net positive feedback causing a runaway (Venus type) effect are unsupported. 11/n

... b) the separation of forcing and feedback remains hard, c) the patterns of warming in the Pacific also differ between models and observations (“pattern effect”).10/n

The good: climate models largely replicate these cloud SW effects. So yes, the feedbacks do point towards higher warming, but nothing completely unexpected. The worrying: a) the clear sky SW part remains to be explained, climate models do not show a total EEI trend as pronounced as observed, ... 9/n

Guest post: How declining cloudiness is accelerating global warming - Carbon Brief How the decline in global cloudiness affects the Earth’s “energy imbalance” – the difference between absorbed solar energy and heat radiated into space.

Paolo Ceppi argue that the SW cloud part is largely human induced, through higher SSTs and CO2 leading to a warmer atm., decreased rel. hum., and less clouds. Lower aerosols due to stricter shipping fuel regulations reducing cloud cond. also contribute. 8/n

Changes in clouds have been documented from satellite before, but the satellite record is short (grey line in figure) and interannual variability is large. And so far, it was largely unclear how much was forced vs. unforced (i.e. variability). 7/n

EEI however has increased by a factor 2-3 in just 2 decades, which is massive. And it’s *not* due to more CO2, which would reduce outgoing longwave (LW) radiation. It’s shortwave (SW). Candidates include changes in scattering (reduced air pollution), surface albedo (snow, ice), and cloud cover. 6/n

Surface warming has accelerated in recent decades, with 2023/2024 breaking records. We largely understand 2023/2024, and the acceleration is well documented, as we showed here. 4/n

We’ve been tracking surface temperature for over a century, but over 90% of the energy ends up in the ocean. Only a small fraction remains in the atmosphere. Surface temperature is a good proxy for most impacts (which is why the Paris agreement uses it), but EEI tracks the total heat content. 3/n

State of the Global Climate 2025 WMO’s State of the Global Climate report 2025 confirms that 2015-2025 are the hottest 11-years on record, and that 2025 was the second or third hottest year on record, at about 1.43 °C above the 1850-...

For the first time, the “State of the Climate” report includes the Earth Energy Imbalance (EEI) as an indicator. The EEI is fundamentaL: if it’s positive, then the Earth is absorbing more energy than it’s releasing to space and therefore must warm. 2/n

The last 11 years were the hottest on record, which is unsurprising and worrying at the same time, because we don’t fully understand why.

Unterwegs in Blatten. Ein Portrait über mich, die Liebe zu den Bergen, den Umgang mit Risiken, und die Überzeugung, dass positive Narrative, Lösungen und ein politischer Rahmen zwingend sind.

It appears that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has, within the past week, scrubbed a large amount of climate change content from its official website, as well as *removed human-caused warming* from the discussion on its "causes of climate change" page.

Was kostet eine Tonne CO₂?

Exclusive: a Nature analysis signals the beginnings of a US science brain drain A trawl of job views and application data suggests jobseekers are looking abroad as the Trump administration’s cuts to science take hold.

The US brain drain.
Cutting science, innovation and education is an incredibly short-sighted strategy. The loss in competitiveness, innovation, leadership and economic value to society is large, long-lasting and almost certainly exceeds the short-term savings by far.
