I have heard that Brits don't want it. Do you need ID in the UK to vote or open an account?

Requiring govt issued ID to vote feels like a normal uncontroversial thing. But people say disenfranchises a lot of people in the US. How do those people do every day things without it? Is it difficult to get one?

Ignorant question: why is requiring ID a controversial recurring issue in the US? In most countries I know, having an ID card (not passport or drivers licence) is nearly universal and also necessary for things like opening a bank account. And voting of course. Do Americans not have/need IDs?
