Sir James Munby, former president of the High Court family division, died on New Year’s Day. He was 77.
“That he chose to spend the greater part of his career in family law was of great and long-lasting benefit," his successor Sir Andrew McFarlane said.

David Lammy will respond today to Sir Brian Leveson’s review of the criminal courts. It seems the justice secretary is not going quite as far as originally reported. But he would not be the first to ask for more in order to claim credit for making concessions.

There is no 'need'. I think it's simply a recognition of the status of the two roles which they hold & will have held when they retire
The Lady or Lord Chief Justice is generally referred to by the initials, LCJ or is simply The Chief (but not in Court)
Apologies - just realised my mistake; from reading your profile too superficially!
No need to apologise Jacob
Indeed - I was trying to explain in a few words for an American reader!
The male chief justices have always for hundreds of years been referred to as Lord Chief Justice. Lady Carr is our First Lady Chief. The role makes post holder a member of the House of Lords (our upper house of Parliament) where all the occupants are referred to as Lords or Ladies

A magistrate has been sacked for gross misconduct after disclosing details "to members of an organisation with which he was affiliated concerning proceedings connected to that organisation" that could have identified an alleged victim of sexual abuse.

These are funny precisely because we all know we've made these sorts of silly/funny mistakes ourselves. Not the least bit cruel, imo
