Sharp Cheddar Ramp Cheese Straws Inspired by my Aunty Gweneth’s recipe, these crisp, savoury cheese straws get a spring update with sharp cheddar, black pepper, mustard, and finely chopped ramps.

Ramps had other plans, so I pivoted. Took inspiration from my Aunty Gweneth’s cheese straw recipe and made my own spring version with ramps. Crisp, savory, and very hard to stop eating.

Ramps, Scarcity, and Spring Desire How a wild Appalachian leek became a seasonal obsession

Every spring, ramps return with the energy of a limited drop.

This week’s post is about the wild leek, the legend, and the politics around who gets access, who gets priced out, and how quickly seasonal desire can turn into excess.

Small. Fuzzy. Green. Slightly warm from the sun. You’ve Never Actually Tasted an Almond Before

I thought I knew what almonds tasted like.

Turns out… I didn’t.

Green almonds, diaspora, seasonality, and the politics of what we eat.

New piece just dropped.

The Political Life of the Easter Carrot From peasant food to chocolate icon, how a root vegetable became part of a global belief system

The Easter carrot isn’t random.
It’s a symbol shaped by medieval poverty, Dutch nationalism, wartime propaganda, and a cartoon rabbit that lied to everyone.

Food becomes politics. Politics becomes culture.

The Food Politics of Mâche I came across mâche this week and didn’t expect the history that came along with it.

So mâche doesn’t look like a political ingredient…but neither do most things that carry history

Obviously I wrote about it 🌿

The Strawberry 🍓 That Lied to Me What pineberries reveal about how we see, taste, and misunderstand food

The Mandarinquat Experiment Brown butter vanilla curd from a citrus hybrid that looks like fan fiction.

Mandarinquats look like citrus fan fiction. So naturally I turned them into brown butter vanilla curd.

Recipe and kitchen story below.

What exactly is a mandarinquat? A tiny citrus hybrid with a surprisingly big story about agriculture, markets, and access.

Somehow I’ve ended up down a fascinating rabbit hole about mandarinquats. They look like a tiny mandarin & kumquat baby & somehow taste like both. I wrote about them this week and currently testing a mandarinquat recipe for Sunday. Check it out if you’re interested! open.substack.com/pub/tasteful...

The Frankenfruits Are Delicious How hybrid fruit became one of the most delicious experiments in agriculture.

This week I learned:
• every navel orange is a clone
• a man spent 40 years matchmaking fruit trees
• pineberries taste like pineapple but look like ghost strawberries

The produce aisle is stranger than we think.

I wrote about hybrid fruit 🍓

Breakfast shouldn’t be this seductive… but here we are. 🍳

Toasted pita, a lake of hummus, one reckless sunny egg and a scandalous spoonful of chili garlic crisp. This is your sign to become that breakfast person.

You can eat it! The jelly is safe because the leaves are only steamed, not eaten raw–—mostly flavour, but a tiny bit of nutrients too.

Okay, so… I may have just invented the most unexpected marshmallow ever. 🍋 Soft, pillowy, and made with my mum’s old-school method—but flavored with ponzu, miso, lemon zest, and vanilla. Sweet meets savory meets umami. Would you try it?

You’re right—raw tomato leaves (and green tomatoes) have alkaloids. Steeping mellows them, and you’re only using the infusion, not the leaves themselves. Like rhubarb, it’s all about prep + portion.

You’re welcome!! And stay tuned, I’ll definitely be posting more… not everything will be recipe based, but a good portion will be since my content is mostly about food 😊✨✨

It starts here… with tomato leaves you’d never expect to use. Steeped, sweetened, and transformed into a jelly that tastes like summer in a jar. 🌱 #JamMaking #JellyMaking #Condiments #TomatoLeaf #CulinaryCurious
