I bounced off Derry Girls but How to Get to Heaven from Belfast is amazing.

I'm worried that convenience will win out over hand-crafting, and that means that millions will never learn that technically unnecessary skill that ends up enriching us all.

Since we are DIY by definition and don't earn a living making things, there's no livelihood risk. But I am worried that in a generation there will be massive loss of hobby skills. AI can make a meme or design a T-shirt with much less effort than doing it the human way.
3/4 damnit
That's DIY hobby design and the world of hobby designers. By which, I mean people (like me) who like to fire up image editors, modelers, illustration tools, etc. to make fun things for ourselves, or community, or for the internet at large.

A lot has been written about AI and what its increased use might cost us, but I was struck the other day by another risk, albeit not critical the same was as, say, the loss of industry knowledge or impact to people's actual jobs.

GIF of Tim Curry from Hunt for Red October saying "You will receive the Order of Lenis for this, Captain.
No left-aligned advocate anywhere can say anything silly or else the Dem Party must bow & scrape & apologize & promise to be more masculine going forward. The president can make a video of himself shitting on Americans from a plane & the GOP will never be asked about it. Those are just the rules.
"I wasn't skin-deep gorgeous. I was gorgeous in attitude. And I was gorgeous, I think, in a certain kind of courage."

Win or lose, there remains a real measure of promise and decency in America that is worth the fight. And win or lose, there is no dignity for any of us unwilling to have that fight.
They were trying to save face! They spent even more against Biss and only ended up accidentally helping Kat while Fine just kept losing ground. They totally played themselves.
Biss's sponsored a RCV bill for state elections when he was a state senator!
I believe he would have won even in a RCV situation. The good news is Fine lost.
Been on a casual unfollow spree for anyone who generalizes a lone Democrat or a position a minority of Democrats hold with the entire party.
Not worth a block, but that's the kind of undermining that doesn't actually improve the party and paints a distorted picture of what the party stands for.
Living in a bright blue city, I don't run across all that many conservatives, the major exception being at work.
And every one of them is terrified of crime, and doesn't believe the crime rate dropped precipitously starting 30 years ago.
No doubt, also people gotta stop acting like he represents anything close to the average Democrat.
He gets attention for, among other reasons, going on Fox. He is not representative of very much of the party.
I'd rather fuss with the model, make a new thing.
Other people want to paint and make exquisite finished items.
Others still like to make basic functional items that maybe they just downloaded.
It's all valid.
Gatekeeping sucks.
This has been my Ted Talk.
I met new friends not long ago and mostly they download and print. But they'd gotten into tinkercad and made a few things. I excitedly told them about my Tinkercad->Blender journey.
I doubt that happens if printing didn't get more plug-and-play.
Relatively easy printing now means that people who don't get thrilled by the tinkering and experimenting and "dialing in" aren't kept from other aspects.
If all I ever had was my starter Ender I wouldn't have created half the stuff I have, not to mention the stuff I "just print" that's useful.
The advanced things vary!
They can be
- building a collection of self-printerd miniatures of your favorite things
- sanding, prepping, painting for a nicer miniature
- learning the basics of modeling so you can create or alter a model to suit yourself
- then making even more complex things
Because 1) that's fine! And 2) that's a potential gateway to doing more advanced things.
Yes, there are plenty of people who buy a 3D printer, download some models and just print.
That you can do that is a feature, not a problem.
It took a while, but it seems like we're past the point where there's a large contingent of people saying 3D printing doesn't count as a hobby unless it's hard.

Martin Gore: In my song I invented a Personal Jesus as a cautionary tale.
Evangelicals: At long last, we have created a Personal Jesus from classic Depeche Mode song Don't Create a Personal Jesus
And I just rewatched it and the mature resolution comes later... But still bold to make Lois and Clark more nuanced in their relationship.
I feel similarly about Heat, but that movie's a bit of a sacred cow for a lot of people.
Pacino was a great actor for a long time. Love him in peak 70s mode. But by the 90s he was really not acting at the same level.
So, Righteous Kill is a bad movie, but it's fun to watch the differences between DeNiro and Pacino. DeNiro gives a solid performance that's not exactly outside his usual stuff, but a bit different. And Pacino phones it in (with shoddy cell coverage at that).
Still amazes that the big Lois/Clark scenes are unabashedly adult relationship scenes. Bold move to make their first substantial interaction a model of how mature couples argue. Great model for kids and grownups alike.
That's where heat vision comes from!
TIL there was a Breeders cover band named Divine Hammers. And another band named Speedy Ortiz.
I've been randomly searching stuff for a while and it's vast.
