AI stands in for text-to-speech and scheduling software, anything that is digitally helpful to them is AI

had a grad seminar where i had my students read and talk about AI, and i was surprised by how attached some of them were to it. it seems at least some have felt so alienated from computing technology, that they are clinging to a plain text way to make computer even pretend to do something useful

is there a word for like cockney rhyming slang but you call things by a name that has the same abbreviation as the original thing? like saying "girlfriend" for "gluten-free"

i am really blown away by it. if anyone ever asks me for a good example of a "serious game" i would give it immediately. i teach ebert's "games can never be art" argument in my intro class and it's a perfect rebuttal.

yes, i didn't mean to excuse the behavior. also in my experience if you are a professor long enough you forget the precarity of being a graduate student. i'd say continued nudges until forms are signed is more than justified

you'd know them better than me, but in my experience academics are just not good at bureaucracy. filling out a form can send a cold shiver down the spine of a tenured professor

A monkey on a typewriter for 1000 years will write the works of Shakespeare. 1000 monkeys will only take a year. Now, imagine a million monkeys, all inside a data center in Utah, they can only type using cut-up versions of Shakespeare you stole, and they each drink a liter of water a minute.

the fact that a student is interacting with an AI agent casts the accommodation as personalized in some way, but in fact it can only be less personal (coming from a tool which cannot think) than interacting with a professor (who presumably cares about their students)

it's baffling to see the article list out many accommodations which should already be offered by the university or by the INSTRUCTOR THEMSELVES and instead suggest AI should do inevitably less good versions of them

say what you will about dispatch's writing, i do think there's something commendable about how it requires a refutation of carceral logic for its good ending. not just in a totally thin way either. reading the steam discussions for it really reveals how that grates on people, or at least gamers

The U.S. may already be cooked, but the rest of the world still has time to shift toward sovereign platforms.

This whole series has been great, and genuinely moving, despite (or because of) being polished campaign video.

It is so rare to see those techniques—with that *surety*—used to say things like this, from positions like this, with a platform like this. No hedging, here.

Makes me want to do the work

i beat Consume Me yesterday, and i feel like it's story is undercut by the fact it is winnable. in this story about the pressures and pains of disordered eating and academic pressure i could have it all, never go to bed hungry, and ace every test because i was just good at it

folks, you ever notice the slang is when someone is "cooking" they're doing well, but once they're "cooked", then they're doing poorly. folks, it's like we're constantly living in a state of becoming, and to finally rest is to meet death

In Mario Kart World, NPCs will park their cars, exit them, and walk around. However, the game does not actually keep track who each car belongs to. As such, a different NPC than the owner may drive away with a car, seemingly stealing it.
