Putting "be yourself" as a caption on a widely held ideal is....well, let's go with shortsighted.

What I need is an illustration of a 40 something trans women, mired in mid transition blues, who's just fighting to make it work. That would be heartening. I assume others might feel the same...

Earlier I was looking at random art on Tumblr when I came across one titled "Be Yourself" and all I could think was, "look, if 'being myself' meant being a hot girl, in her early 20s, with awesome tattoos and real god damned angels wings, trust me, I would always be myself without question or qualm"

I know it's a common theme for artists to say things like "be yourself". I, of course, agree. But I do wish folks would take some care on what sort of art they attach the sentiment to.

As time goes by the wounds stop stinging, but it leaves a scar that aches when you remember why it's there. At some point I assume I will accept the blemish as part of my life's story, perhaps even treasure it for the strength I gained from the experience.

Saw an ad for mothers day today and I'm like....this has got to be the worst holiday for me. We usually just celebrated it as women's day. So, it reminds me mostly of family celebrations where my views were ignored and, eventually, the mother who rejected me, personally, outright.

I mostly have been reading manga, but I diverged into novels recently. So far “Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea” has been my favorite. It’s sapphic fantasy, so there’s a huge adventure plot, but a massive part of the story is the main characters romance, so I’d say it counts.

As someone who is in dead serious about romance, I agree. 😂

Granted, this is kind of rose tinted memories. You did see updates like that, but there were also hot takes and sometimes life updates could get overly personal -_-;;

I remember back when social media wasn’t really about hot takes and being funny. But rather was more like a series of status update, ie, “Jessica is eating a sandwich” (classic Facebook).

Not sure that it was better or worse. But it was different, and definitely a bit calmer…
