@slj.com I've been trying to access Joyce Valenza's blog post blogs.slj.com/neverendings... but the site says critical error since last week. I accessed it through the Wayback Machine but I really hope access is restored at this link that is posted all over the web. Tks.

"[...] if the [National] Forest loses the research station, they’re also losing that information about how best to do their management."

"And problems in the forest don’t stay in the forest."

"The sponsor, Rep. Gino Bulso, insists the measure is "nonpartisan."
The bill's name, its political provenance and its enumerated concerns, "opposition to abortion, homosexuality or transgender behavior," that appear in the companion package, tell another story."

This Isn't Trading. It's Theft from Your Retirement. Someone keeps making perfectly-timed bets right before the President speaks. The victims are your pension, your 401(k), and the country I took an oath to defend.

Fifteen minutes before the President announced he was pausing strikes on Iran, somebody moved $500 million in oil futures. Somebody knew. Somebody told them. Or somebody is them.

I love me some libraries! The library was always my sanctuary, my safe space, my second home. Today, the library is sanctuary to the books I write, the stories I tell! Ever and always, my safe space. This is from Jumping Off Library Shelves, an anthology by Lee Bennett Hopkins. #nationallibraryweek

Mexico’s monarch butterfly population jumps 64%, offering hope for at-risk species The insects covered its largest area since 2018, despite threats from habitat loss, climate crisis and pesticides

Always nice to see a bit of good news. 🧡

Three cheers for Mexico's monarch butterfly population, which is still in danger, but which rebounded to its highest level since 2018.

🤣🤣🤣

2 teen boys enter the library.

"Ms. Smith! We need to get into reading. We heard HOT girls like men who read."

*trying to stay composed*

"I can help you with that. What do you think you would like to read?"

B1: "What should I be seen reading?"

🤣🤣

I hooked them up with books & bookmarks.

Small lime green metal bucket is on a woodgrain surface next to a set of clear acrylic drawers. A sign on top of the drawers says “this or that." The left drawer is labeled with a picture of Pete the Cat. The right drawer is labeled with a picture of Jasper Rabbit from Creepy Pair of Underwear. Each of the drawers has several red and blue bingo chips inside.

This week's book character match up at our library's circulation desk features Pete the Cat and Jasper Rabbit. Any predictions on this week's winner? #SchoolLibrary #kidlit #TLSky #EduSky

Maurice J. Freedman - Wikipedia

Today is National Library Workers Day, celebrating the people who do the work. ALA can't lobby for worker's rights because of stupid non-profit reasons but ALA-APA can. This year we lost Mitch Freedman who helped create ALA-APA. May his memory be a blessing. 📚

A post reads, “Heart-stopping moment at the sanctuary! While cleaning the enclosure, the lock on the lion’s gate accidentally clicked open. What happened next left everyone frozen in place” and includes a video that appears to show a zookeeper running away after a tiger escapes its enclosure. The News Literacy Project has added a label that says “AI-GENERATED.”

❌ NO: This is not from a legit video of a zookeeper narrowly escaping after a tiger breaks out of its cage.

✔️ It's AI-generated. Several similar AI videos supposedly showing dangerous situations involving animals have gone viral.

Love! It’s going into my high school classroom library as we get into the Cold War/Space Race. We all deserve to be seen in our heroes! I learned so much - embarrassed to say I had no idea of these heroes. We will be using this book to inspire future research. Picture books belong in all classrooms

The themes under attack and the organized nature of these challenges matter a lot more than this, but I continue to be struck by how old so many of the challenged books are.

Sold, by Patricia McCormick, the #1 challenged title this time around, is 20 years old.

Soooo, now that this data is available to EVERYBODY, it should be even more apparent to schools and librarians that OnShelf/BookmarkED is a waste of money. 👀

Today we remember the horrific tragedy of the Columbine shooting. 27 years later, it is a disgrace that gun violence is still the leading cause of death for children in America.

It's normal in libraries to see a small number of book challenges by parents & patrons who have concerns about content. Today, however, 92% come from organized groups, including officials and dark money groups like Citizens for a New LA. It's time we reclaim our libraries for the people they serve.

Worth naming what book bans actually do: they don’t erase ideas, they concentrate shame on the kids whose stories get pulled. A child who sees their family, their body, or their history removed from the shelf learns something. Laws like this interrupt that lesson.
