Map of the contiguous United States showing the spring bloom index anomaly as of April 19, 2026 from the USA National Phenology Network. Many areas are earlier than normal.

Aside from Florida, nearly the entire contiguous U.S. has experienced earlier than average first plant blooms in 2026. Earlier springs can cause longer allergy seasons, accelerate wildfire risk, increase pests/mosquitoes, and lead to less reliable snow-fed water.

Opinion: The chilling reality of a warming world The latest report by the IPCC shows the impacts of climate change on the ocean and the earth's frozen regions. Urgent action is needed, says DW's Irene Quaile: If not now, when?

I wrote this commentary in 2019. Unfortunately, I could write it again today:

Fuel eating microbes, chemicals and fire: the race to discover new ways to contain Arctic oil spills As the rising number of vessels in the icy waters increases the risk of environmental disaster, scientists are scrambling to find potential solutions

„At least 100 shadow fleet ships travelled along Russia’s northern sea route last year. (…) In 2025, more than half were oil and liquefied natural gas tankers, 18 of which had low or no ice class, meaning they were not designed to operate in icy waters.“

Don’t fly me to the moon Why NASA’s record breaking lunar mission left me strangely unmoved

My sentiments entirely:
“So as (..) inspiring it is to witness humans one again venture into deep space, I cannot separate this from what have done in the intervening decades – and what we continue to knowingly do to our home planet.”

Argentina just ripped up its pioneering glacier law. What does this mean for millions of people’s drinking water? Javier Milei’s reforms to the law will open up high-altitude areas to mining and risk water reserves already strained by the climate crisis, say activists

“What is at stake is the protection of key water reserves in Argentina (…) Saying that you have to destroy glaciers to guarantee the energy transition is an oxymoron.”

Earth being ‘pushed beyond its limits’ as energy imbalance reaches record high State of the Climate report finds Earth’s energy has moved dangerously out of balance, with oceans absorbing vast majority of trapped heat

“The state of the global climate is in a state of emergency. Planet Earth is being pushed beyond its limits. Every key climate indicator is flashing red,” said the UN secretary-general, António Guterres.“

Sea levels around the world are much higher than we thought Most coastal risk assessments have underestimated current sea levels, meaning tens of millions of people face losing their homes to rising waters earlier than expected

99% of research on sea level rise impacts got current sea level wrong (!).
That doesn't mean projections of <1m of sea level rise by 2100 are incorrect.
But it does mean the consequences of this rise will happen sooner, since we're starting from a higher baseline www.newscientist.com/article/2517...
