Horror show Sarah Weinman recommends a place to not go in New York this weekend, or ever

A new immersive exhibition called "Mind of a Serial Killer" opened today in New York City and runs through the end of June. No one will be surprised that I did not care for it, but somehow it was even worse than I expected. My latest at @flaminghydra.com:

Will this be recorded?!? I loved reading Steve Padilla’s writing tips back in the days of Twitter. Wish he’d come to Bluesky!

The front cover of a paperback copy of the Dutch version of J.R.R. Tolklien's The Hobbit, circa 1960. Eight cheerful-looking cartoon figures with long grey beards surround a smaller, waving beardless figure in the middle.

Death is always lurking. We see it in violence, in the wounds of the world, in the cry of pain that rises from every corner because of the abuses that crush the weakest among us, because of the idolatry of profit that plunders the earth's resources, because of the violence of war that kills and destroys.

Hearst exec: Yes, newspapers are still a good investment Newspapers overall are grappling with digital disruption but they're still a good business for the publishing giant Hearst, which is buying and growing dailies.

You read that right: The Seattle Times' weekly "Save newspapers, but only newsPAPERS" column is about how we all should listen to the CEO of Hearst... the company that shut down the Seattle P-I and turned it into a zombie website.

As a side note, I am extremely tired of a handful of Seattle World Cup games being used as excuses for all kinds of permanent policy decisions, including the installation of dozens of new cameras all around the city's stadiums. It's harder to turn off the surveillance state once you've built it.

Everyone, but particularly Americans, need to find, read, or listen to, the chapter ā€œThe Fine Art of Baloney Detectionā€ in Carl Sagan’s incredibly informative book ā€˜The Demon-Haunted World’. It really should be a compulsory text in all schools. (But, it’s stuff that ā€˜they’ don’t want you to know)

In Mexico we don’t say ā€œdon’t be so naive.ā€ Instead we say ā€œno te hagas pendejo/aā€ and ƍ think that’s beautiful.

I have family all over Mexico. I’m Mexican – I know there’s differences in regional Mexican food. Beyond the rice and beans, that not really authentic.
