😂 I got pulled over for carrying a flapjack in the bottom of my backpack recently (I never travel without an emergency snack), but the density of this particular one looked suspicious apparently!

Finally! I'm so pleased this has happened.
Well this took me a while to get round to, but I finally baked the doubled-up recipe and it took an extra 40 mins (although I had substituted some yoghurt for one of the eggs as I ran out!). Such an amazing cake!
What a great article. Sadly, children in the UK can't get the Covid vaccine (maybe unless in a vulnerable group?), not even privately.
This video is another part of my interview with @alexverbeek.bsky.social at the JMP Software Discovery Summit.
It was great to hear how he thinks scientists can communicate their science to wider audiences - particularly to create action around climate.

I recently had a chance to interview @alexverbeek.bsky.social at a JMP Software Discovery Summit.
It was brilliant to hear his thoughts on how we can use data to influence the public and leaders into climate action.
You can see one part of the interview here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYQF...
I think we should be careful to dispose of the poo in a bin when the dog has just had a wormer or flea treatment as I know a lot ends up coming back out in the poo. But I do think if you can responsibly flick it into the undergrowth normally then it's probably preferable to poo bags!
I visited the Sandringham estate and they have signs saying to 'stick and flick' the poo into the undergrowth as they'd prefer people not to use bags. I do try to minimise my bag use by using the same bag for multiple poos on a walk (I have 2 dogs). I hate that the only accepted solution is plastic!
Publishing looks glossy from the outside. Inside? It’s built on unpaid labour.
My first book is out this year.
Here’s what I actually got paid, what my contract says, & why most authors can’t afford to do this twice.

Thank you, and that's interesting! I'll give it a go then and check it as it cooks. I need to double up the recipe because the standard size doesn't last long in my house! 😀
This really is such a good recipe. I make it more often as the loaf, but the pudding is such a treat! How do you recommend altering the cooking time if I double up the batter for the loaf tin?
Yay! @alcs.co.uk distribution day - or as I call it: The magic book money!
Thank you for all the work you do to pay writers. It really does mean so much to know people are using the words I put out into the world and that I get rewarded when they do!
All of my books are on this list 😢
Copyright law is being completely ignored. Most authors barely make any money from books anyway and this just makes it worse!
If you have any reach on Bluesky, please consider reposting so I can find old and new friends (and then I’ll follow you back 😊).
I'm Alexander Verbeek and publish about the climate crisis, environment, the beauty of nature, science, walking, sustainability, wildlife, photography, water, and energy.
Hhhhmmmm, OK, good to know. Thanks!
Sorry, for clarity, I meant does vaccine immunity wane?
Hold on, I know vaccines aren't 100%, but can I be fairly sure I'm immune if I had the boosters as a kid?
☄️ We aren’t just waiting for an asteroid to strike. We are taking active measures to help Earth defend itself against a potential impact.
Which is why we are endorsing the the United Nations' designation of 2029 as the International Year of Asteroid Awareness and Planetary Defence.
Excellent. Dog trainers are amazing. It always seems like such simple advice but the success comes in actually doing it consistently which I've found the hardest part with my second dog.
They definitely go through stages and most pass but it’s always worth keeping an eye on behaviour changes. Sounds like you have a good pup there though. Hope he keeps following commands for you!
My 11 year old who was bonkers for 3 years but absolutely gorgeous the whole time. Still carries a toy around with her.
Also, I would love to see a pic of the pup. Big or small breed? Big breeds can take longer to ‘grow up’ and be sensible.
If still testing patience at 1 (pup should start to calm a lot by then) then I’d suggest getting a good trainer involved for advice. Consider changing puppy’s diet (changed my first dogs behaviour markedly), and look at enrichment activities. But also, it does get better, generally.
This is tea-riffic!
And then in April I've organised for Bake-Off finalist Josh Smalley to join Chemistry World again from his science kitchen to showcase the science behind international Easter breads:
Rising to the occasion: the chemistry of Easter breads

I've arranged for some really excellent expert speakers to talk about GLP-1 weight-loss drugs in this webinar in March:
Harnessing hormones for health: Taking GLP-1 from research to reality

And here's a taster of the types of science you get to chat to experts about. I'm not hosting any of these upcoming webinars but I've put them together and I will enjoy seeing how they go in my absence.

I only have a few weeks left in my current role at @chemistryworld.com so if you're keen to do what I've been doing then please check out the #JobAdvert for my role and think about applying. It's a very fun job in a brilliantly supportive and kind team: www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/sc...

It feels like a million years ago, but it was only 17 (although that’s still forever!). I took a break during my PhD to work on the Caribbean island of Montserrat studying the active Soufriere Hills. One of the best experiences of my life!
I'm looking forward to reading @drjohnodonoghue.bsky.social's new book and hearing him speak in an upcoming @chemistryworld.bsky.social webinar all about it.
