Usually without knowing it

I mean like chapter 1 of radical focus is like «hey I know y’all wanna do this but DO NOT make OKR theatre» and then all orgs ever: «Yeah we do OKR theatre here»

Work methodology is kind of like religion: The core ideals are good, it’s just that people interpret it to mean anything and therefore it kind of loses it’s value 🙈

We’ll surely avoid scurvy if we all eat an orange!

Yeah it’ll back up to basically anything. But using Tailscale does make the networking part of this basically trivial! Just fyi if you haven’t tried it yet

Maybe I should 🤔

I just saw a post on hackernews about someone using Claude to set up their NAS and was planning on complaining loudly about it 🙈

This seems more productive..

Link the computers over the network with Tailscale or something similar. Two sites. Then a restic rest server on each, and make them back up to each other.

That way your backup is offsite as well!

And automated, otherwise you’ll forget

restic · Backups done right!

Backup! The most boring about this.. but super important.

Restic is what you want!

restic.net

It makes nice encrypted incremental backups and is open source. But it’s just a CLI tool. So you need a scheduler. To do that you can use a docker container with backrest:

FUTO Self Managed Guide

Oooo I love this thread! Been nerding about this stuff since Covid. It was my Covid obsession 🙈

Louis Rossman made a great guide on open-sourcing your life, everything from photo storage to NVE to router. Def worth your time only for the tips on software:

It looks like Linux did in the 2010s.. so depending on your preferences I guess but probably no 😅

They had a patch like last month which made the thing partly responsive and before that it was desktop-only and so tedious to use on the go.

Definitely made by sysadmins..

The OS also runs off a USB stick so in theory you can just switch out all the parts of the computer and just bring your drives whenever you need to upgrade. Which is nice for storage meant to last 😊

I’ve built a new server recently-ish just with my old gaming computer parts and a new tower and put Unraid on it.

Super easy to expand drives, the «not-RAID» parity model works very well and you can just run Docker containers for everything else like Plex/Docker/restic-backup

I’ve had a Synology for years, way before drive-gate. It’s still sitting there humming along!

Buuuuut.. It’s expensive to expand storage. Especially with Synology you’re kind of stuck with the layout you set up when you buy it. And all the software (though nice) is very proprietary and locked in.

Takk!
