🥳Today we’re celebrating the publication anniversary of Star Carr Volumes 1 & 2 which explores one of Europe’s most important Mesolithic sites. First discovered in the late 1940s by John Moore and excavated by Grahame Clark (1949–1951), the site transformed our understanding of Mesolithic life.

WRUP were thrilled to work with Nicky Milner in delivering these groundbreaking open access volumes, and are very excited an the prospect of a third, companion volume on the nearby Flixton Island site, that is currently in preparation.

Combined, the Star Carr volumes have the highest number of downloads for WRUP publications, with 51,744 downloads in total. Star Carr has also won "Research Project of the year" in the Current Archaeology Awards (2014 and 2020).

Together, the two volumes present these findings: Volume 1 interprets the site and its long-term use, while Volume 2 explores specialist research, including artefacts, structures, environmental evidence, and plant and animal remains.

New excavations (2003–2015) re-examined how the site was used, finding Star Carr was occupied for 800 years & was larger & more complex than once thought. Discoveries include Britain’s earliest houses, wooden lake-edge platforms, antler headdresses, & the earliest known Mesolithic art in Britain.
