Selling-off and selling-out are land transactions but they're both erasure by another name.

Now we watch as Ford leads and institutions follow, dismantling them through managed neglect and a particular indifference: to the public, to anyone who might want a planetarium or a public lakeshore or a community that has survived dispossession once already and does not need to do it again.

In the contemporary timeline of Toronto "the good", these four were arguments worth making—civic architecture as a form of care, spaces where publics were actually imagined and built.

The McLaughlin Planetarium, Ontario Science Centre, Ontario Place, and the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre.
Buildings are not neutral. They can be arguments about who a city is for, what it values, and what it thinks is worth keeping.

Who isn’t welcome in Mark Carney’s technicolour Liberal caucus? - National | Globalnews.ca The prime minister has drawn floor crossers that range from an NDP MP that backed Avi Lewis to a conservative that wanted December to be known as 'Christian Heritage Month.'

Mark Carney is one Bloc MP and one Elizabeth May away from a full House of Commons set. globalnews.ca/news/1177188...

This is how @airfrance.bsky.social treats customers (in this case, grant-funded researchers). Damage your equipment, offer 5%, refuse to explain, charge you twice, walk away.

Case C-10376743 for anyone tracking Air France's customer care standards.

1 month later, after 12+ emails and multiple documentation and receipt requests (all provided), Air France's offer: €100. No breakdown. No justification. Customer Care response: "There is nothing further I can add to what has already been stated."

Amid a war on public knowledge, libraries are pushing outward, enlarging the commons through new configurations of civic and creative life.

In her latest — and, yes, 34th! — article for Places, @shannonmattern.bsky.social writes about building the infrastructure we need to keep ourselves free.

From the Soil to the Sky Elise Misao Hunchuck writes to Montserrat Bonvehí Rosich

“Every city is built on the decomposed dreams of its previous inhabitants, the material breakdown of obsolete social relations, the nutritive remains of sometimes abandoned, sometimes destroyed, ways of life.”

This is the great @elisehunchuck.bsky.social at the CCA website. Go and read this!!

The claim that libraries are an alternative to libgen is ridiculous. Almost all libraries don't have expensive academic books. Libgen is the university library of the world, open to everyone regardless of wealth, location, or academic credentials.

Some days one misses home more than others.

Image from September 3, 1973, is one of the first images published by NASA and Landsat. At the top of the colour composite image, just right of centre, you can see the familiar sprawl—even then!—of Toronto holding onto the edge of Lake Ontario.

It has been more than two days that the supply of electricity to Gaza has been shut off. It must resume — essentials including food, electricity, and medical supplies should never be used as political tools. (1/3)

The exhibition is only part of the story. Monies raised from each exhibition are put into a trust aimed at resources, quick response funding, skills workshops, and support to experimental artists living and working across the Pacific region, where the arts are profoundly underfunded (if at all).

Poilievre promises new military base in Nunavut as part of Arctic defence plan | CBC News The federal Conservatives have taken the wraps off a portion of their plan for defence — specifically defending the Far North.

In 2024, the Liberals released a "defence update" titled "Our North Strong and Free". Now PP shows up in Iqaluit with essentially no warning and wants to outdo them. (Will a full base in Iqaluit have any consequences? Who cares?) The persistent militarization of the North: www.cbc.ca/news/politic...
