50 years old today.
Grateful for all of it.
My family, my work, my health,
And all of you.

My mind is on the future
500 years from now
(To pick a round number)
My hope for humanity
And the earth
Is tested, daily,
But undiminished

Love to all.

The Professor And The Pies
Lovely little story about an old professor and some mice who bake him Christmas pies. Written and narrated by my dad—music by me! Perfect time of year to find this on podcast (or YouTube)

My hotel balcony overlooks the bar.

The door is open to rid my instrument cases and the room of the smell of marajuana. Mind you, NONE of this pot smell is of my making—my studio is in Oregon and all my gear reeks from a nearby grow.

The number of versions of Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer I’ve heard today can no longer be accurately calculated. Mind you, this is coming from a poolside bar in LA.

I like the finest whole wheat grind I can find for bread baking. I’ve heard that the ground husk acts like tiny knives puncturing the open bubbles in a proofing crumb, so the finer the better, imo

I blend in a local organic wheat mix that’s grown near me in Oregon from Camas Mill. I suggest finding something similar in your area. I’m not as fond as most of the standard grocery store whole wheat offerings in terms of flavor and grind.

The blog The Perfect Loaf has some great tips for this kind of pursuit. We can DM about this too—always happy to share sourdough tips!

An open crumb is usually a result of a strong starter, a good proof that’s not TOO long (so it still has somewhere to go in the oven), & higher hydration. I find King Arthur Bread Flour to be foolproof for a stretchy open crumb, and then I mix in local, organic, flavorful flours. 1/2

U.S. Border Agents Seize 3,000 Fake Gibson Guitars They would have been worth nearly $18 million if they were genuine, making it the largest counterfeit instrument seizure in history, officials said.

The question is, what is the port authority going to do with 3000 seized counterfeit Gibson guitars? If the answer is not “give them to young, low-income, budding musicians” then it’s the wrong answer.

Zadie Smith received an award from the Kenyon Review.

Used a story by Flannery O’Connor, The Life You Save May Be Your Own, to discuss our present moment and the incoming administration.

It’s a good read.

These two birds—male & female Lazuli Buntings— struck our window and died instantly together. Eight hours later my wife went into labor and delivered our firstborn. Never forget the world is a mysterious and wonderful place.
